Marion Bartoli vs. Sabine Lisicki: Complete Viewing Guide for Wimbledon Final

Alex KayJun 6, 2018

Two unexpected survivors of the women’s bracket at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships are set to face off on Saturday, with No. 15 seed Marion Bartoli going up against No. 23 seed Sabine Lisicki to determine the winner of this wild tournament.

The past two weeks have been a nonstop thrill ride of upset and intrigue in the women’s bracket, highlighted by early exits from star players such as Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic.

And defending champion Serena Williams wasn’t able to advance past the fourth round, leaving the field wide open for every competitor in the quarterfinals.

Neither of these women has every captured a Grand Slam title. Bartoli’s best finish came at this event back in 2007, but she lost to Venus Williams in her first and only appearance in a major final.

Meanwhile, Lisicki is making the first finals showing of her relatively short career. Her previous best efforts came at All England Club, with a quarterfinal finish last year and in 2009, plus a semifinals appearance in 2011.

While both players have a golden opportunity to make history and win a Grand Slam, it will not be easy.

Bartoli has been able to waltz through the tournament without facing a higher seed, but she has yet to face an opponent as strong and consistent as Lisicki. The 23-year-old German is playing brilliantly at this juncture and has handled everything the event has thrown at her.

However, the Frenchwoman is better equipped to be to handle the enormous pressure and will not be satisfied with just making a foray into the finals, as she did six years ago. The 28-year-old Bartoli knows she may never get another chance to leave her mark on history, and this is her best shot at claiming a Grand Slam title.

Expect the more experienced competitor to pull it out on Saturday in an epic showdown.
