Updated Rankings of the Top 10 Free Agent Wings
The 2013 NHL draft is in the books. Now, it's time for the league's general managers to turn their attention to this year's class of free agents.
With the lower salary cap and increased restrictions on long-term contracts, teams may not spend as aggressively as we've seen in past years.
The unrestricted free agent group is not especially deep this year, but there are a number of quality wingers up for grabs. Here's a look at ten of the best.

10. Teemu Selanne
1 of 10Position: RW
Age: 42
2012-13 Stats: 45GP; 12-12-24
2012-13 Cap Hit: $4,500,000
Teemu Selanne sits in tenth spot. At 42, the ageless wonder was a key contributor to the resurgent Anaheim Ducks, though his production dropped off significantly from past seasons.
At season's end, Selanne told nhl.com that he felt he lost a step in the second half of 2012-13. He believed the condensed schedule due to the lockout was tougher than a typical 82-game grind.
The door is likely open for Selanne to re-sign with the Ducks if he chooses. A pay cut from last year's salary is virtually certain.
9. Daniel Alfredsson
2 of 10Position: RW
Age: 40
2012-13 Stats: 47GP; 10-16-26
2012-13 Cap Hit: $4,875,000
The Ottawa Senators are even more keen to welcome back Daniel Alfredsson. In 2012-13, his leadership was a key part of a successful regular season despite a glut of serious injuries.
The captain stepped up even more in the playoffs. He was Ottawa's best player and leading scorer with 10 points in 10 games.
The Senators developed a slew of young talent last season and would like to make more progress in 2013-14. Alfredsson's presence on the ice and in the room could be key to a successful evolution.
8. Dustin Penner
3 of 10Position: LW
Age: 30
2012-13 Stats: 33GP; 2-12-14
2012-13 Cap Hit: $3,250,000
Two years ago, Dustin Penner was little more than a punchline in NHL circles, known less for his contributions on the ice than for injuring himself while eating breakfast.
Fast-forward to today. Penner is a proven playoff warrior (with two Stanley Cup rings), and an impending free agent.
Penner told Jon Hoven of Mayor's Manor that he'd like to return to his Los Angeles Kings, possibly at a discount or on a shorter term, but he'd like to see what the marketplace presents on July 5.
Has Penner been consistent enough to earn an offer from another team that's tempting enough to lure him away from a winning situation with a tightly-knit squad?
7. Danny Briere
4 of 10Position: RW
Age: 35
2012-13 Stats: 34GP; 6-10-16
2012-13 Cap Hit: $6,500,000
After accepting a $3.3 million compliance buyout from the Philadelphia Flyers, Danny Briere is an unrestricted free agent. Pierre LeBrun of ESPN reports that the crafty winger has received inquiries from 15 teams for his services, and will try to narrow his options on Tuesday.
Briere is known as a great teammate with a huge heart. He's also a guy who turns it up in the playoffs, where his production dramatically outpaces his regular season numbers.
With a very good reputation around the league, Briere will not be unemployed for long.
6. Damien Brunner
5 of 10Position: RW
Age: 27
2012-13 Stats: 44GP; 12-14-26
2012-13 Cap Hit: $1,350,000
The Detroit Red Wings did it again. They brought in an unheralded European and made a player out of him.
A free agent signed out of Switzerland last year, Brunner ran a bit hot-and-cold during his first season with the Red Wings, but led the team in goals during their playoff run.
Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that Brunner "loves Detroit" and is interested in a long-term deal, which she thinks he'll get from the Wings. At just $1.35 million last season, Brunner was a bargain, though his negotiating power is somewhat muted due to his limited NHL resume.
5. Jaromir Jagr
6 of 10Position: RW
Age: 41
2012-13 Stats: 45GP; 16-19-35
2012-13 Cap Hit: $4,550,000
During the regular season, Jaromir Jagr could still score. 16 goals and 35 points put him in the league's top 50 in both categories.
Jagr's regular-season performance was impressive enough that Boston GM Peter Chiarelli brought him in as a playoff mercenary for his Bruins. The team did well, but Jagr himself wilted. He finished the postseason goalless, with 10 assists in 22 games.
At season's end, Jagr indicated to Steve Silva at boston.com that he wants to play in the NHL again next year. He won't be returning to the Bruins.
Jagr did slow down as the playoffs progressed, but still produced plenty of scoring chances. The goalless drought was partly the result of some bad luck and bad bounces. Jagr's frustration seemed to mount as the streak extended.
It's unlikely that Jagr's scoring days are over forever. Expect him to offer decent production once again in his new home next year.
4. Nathan Horton
7 of 10Position: RW
Age: 28
2012-13 Stats: 43GP; 13-9-22
2012-13 Cap Hit: $4,000,000
Nathan Horton would rank higher, but his injury situation clouds his status.
A big winger with good hands, Horton's production has been decent in the regular season. When healthy, he's been a beast in Boston's two recent playoff runs.
Horton was rendered ineffective in the Stanley Cup final this year after his shoulder popped out of the socket in Game 1 against Chicago. Joe Haggerty of Comcast Sportsnet indicates that Horton will undergo surgery to repair the shoulder this summer.
Horton has also had concussion issues in the past. He may be one of the younger free agent wingers on the market and appears to have plenty of upside, but his durability is a big question mark.
3. David Clarkson
8 of 10Position: RW
Age: 29
2012-13 Stats: 45GP; 15-9-24
2012-13 Cap Hit: $2,666,667
A relatively unheralded player on the low-profile New Jersey Devils, David Clarkson is getting a lot of attention as one of this year's best potential free agents. That could mean a potential payday that's far outside the budget of notoriously frugal Devils GM Lou Lamoriello.
Clarkson is coveted for his rare combination of toughness and goal-scoring. He had 30 goals in 2011-12 and led the Devils with 15 last season. He plays a chippy game and is not afraid to drop the gloves, a pairing that fans love.
Originally signed by New Jersey as an undrafted free agent, Clarkson is not the most defensively responsible player and can put his team at a disadvantage by taking bad penalties.
If teams can overlook these potential liabilities, or think he'd be coachable in a different organization, Clarkson could cash in when free agency opens on July 5.
2. Pascal Dupuis
9 of 10Position: RW
Age: 34
2012-13 Stats: 48GP, 20-18-38
2012-13 Cap Hit: $1,500,000
He flies under the radar among his superstar teammates on the Pittsburgh Penguins, but dollar-for-dollar, Pascal Dupuis may have been the best player on his team this year.
Now 34, Dupuis' last two seasons have been his best. Riding shotgun alongside Sidney Crosby, Dupuis put up 38 points and a league-leading plus-31 in 2012-13. His playoff performance was also solid.
The Penguins would like to re-sign Dupuis, but money's tight on a star-laden squad and his numbers put him in line for a serious raise, even at his advanced age. His numbers might not stand up on a different team, but Dupuis could have a chance to sign a big-money five-year deal if he accepts the offer of the highest bidder.
1. Jarome Iginla
10 of 10Position: RW
Age: 36
2012-13 Stats: 44GP; 14-19-33
2012-13 Cap Hit: $7,000,000
For the first time in his career, Jarome Iginla is testing the free-agent waters at age 36.
Joining Pittsburgh for the playoff run, he had a decent postseason, especially in the early rounds, but wasn't able to recreate the magic of his "golden goal" with Sidney Crosby from the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Iginla has a great reputation as both a player and a person. He's a tremendous leader who would be an asset in any dressing room and still has an edge to his game. Like many of the other aging stars on this list, his production has tapered off a bit in recent years. A good fit with a new team could ignite a renaissance that sees Iginla enjoy one last cycle of success before he rides off into the sunset.
Free agency likely won't bring a new deal close to the $7 million he made last year, but on balance, Iginla is the best of the bunch available on the wing when free agency opens this Friday.
