Chad Johnson Reportedly Will Be Released From Jail Following Butt Slap Incident

The case of Chad Johnson's parole hearing stemming from domestic violence charges took another strange twist on Monday, as the former star wide receiver was released from jail.

Johnson appeared in a Florida courtroom today...where he faced off with Judge McHugh—the judge who tore him a new one after he slapped his attorney's ass in open court during last week's hearing. 

Johnson was brought into the courtroom wearing handcuffs...and from the moment the hearing began, the judge blasted Chad for his history of disrespectful behavior. 

But after the scolding, the judge agreed to release Johnson today—but extended his probation by one month...meaning he won't be in the clear until October 16.

Johnson apologized during the hearing on Monday (via ESPN):

"

"I just wanted to apologize for disrespecting the court last time," said Johnson, wearing a tan jail jumpsuit with his hands shackled at the waist. "I apologize. I did have time to reflect on the mistakes I made in this courtroom."

Johnson had been negotiating a plea agreement with no jail time after violating his parole, but Judge McHugh did not take kindly to Johnson's courtroom antics and ripped up the plea, giving him 30 days in jail instead.

However, apparently the judge reconsidered after seven days, sending Johnson to jail for that period of time and teaching him a lesson without locking him up for an entire month. 

Though Johnson has been released from jail early, his probation has been extended by one month, so his actions in the courtroom still cost him. 

In his prime, Johnson was one of the most dangerous receivers in football and finished his career with 766 catches for 11,059 yards and 67 touchdowns. He was elected to six Pro Bowls and was twice named a First-Team All-Pro selection.

After an uneventful season with the New England Patriots in 2011, though, he was cut by the Miami Dolphins before the start of the 2012 season after he was arrested for domestic abuse. His wife at the time, Evelyn Lozada, claimed he headbutted her during an argument.

At 35, it remains unlikely Johnson will ever get another shot with an NFL team, especially considering he wouldn't come into a training camp with the most sparkling reputation. 

Nonetheless, if returning to the NFL remains his goal, he won't lose an entire month of training after Judge McHugh's ruling on Monday.
