Contenders for Top Pick
Jonathan Gray, RHP, Oklahoma
The closer we get to the draft, the more it appears that the Astros prefer Jonathan Gray over Stanford right-hander Mark Appel.
The main reason?
Money, of course.
Appel spurned the Pittsburgh Pirates, who selected him last year, to return to Stanford. Many believe Gray would be cheaper to sign.
Make no mistake, however, Gray is certainly a top-five prospect.
First of all, the 6'4", 239-pounder has an outstanding arm. His fastball regularly sits in the mid-to-high 90s and he's been known to hit 100 mph on the radar gun.
He also has a slider that would already be a top-level offering in the majors and could become an elite pitch. Gray has also shown tremendous command with the slider, and is not afraid to throw it on the inside corner to left-handers.
Appel is more polished, but Gray has ace potential. He will need to work on his arm action with his changeup, as well as smooth out the kinks in his delivery to maximize his potential.
Kris Bryant, 3B/OF, San Diego
Kris Bryant was already a first-round talent straight out of high school, but he ended up going to college to play ball.
At the University of San Diego, Bryant showed the power that has scouts salivating. This season, he blasted 31 home runs, 10 more than the second-place batter in Division I ball, via NCAA.com.
While Bryant may never be an above-average hitter, his power is undeniable. He can hit opposite-field home runs with ease, whether it be a fastball or an off-speed pitch low and away.
Bryant plays at third base now, but is probably best suited for the outfield. He's shown the arm and athleticism to play third base, but his instincts don't appear to be fast enough to man the hot corner in the big leagues.
Bryant could very well turn out being the pick for the Astros.
Colin Moran, 3B, North Carolina
While Kris Bryant may have the most potential, Colin Moran would likely be cheaper for the Astros, which would allow them to use that extra money for some talented players later in the draft.
Moran, however, is a solid prospect. He projects to have above-average power in the big leagues and be a better contact hitter than Bryant. He hit .348 with 13 home runs, 86 RBI and 70 runs in 253 at-bats (64 games) this season, according to GoHeels.com.
Moran is also solid in the field. He has good hands, a fluid throwing motion and top-level arm strength. His ability to make an impact on offense and defense is enticing.
Keith Law of ESPN has Moran going No. 1 overall.
