French Open 2013: Breaking Down Most Likely Finals Scenarios

Jeremy FuchsJun 3, 2018

With Roger Federer now out of the French Open 2013, the most likely finals scenarios are coming into clear view.

On the men's side, the most likely finals scenario is Rafael Nadal against David Ferrer.

On the women's side, the most likely finals scenario is Serena Williams against Maria Sharapova.

How will these potential finals play out? Read on to find out.

Nadal vs. Ferrer

In order to get here, Nadal will most likely have to beat Novak Djokovic. While Djokovic is playing great tennis, there is no disputing Nadal's dominance on clay. Nadal has won the last three French Open tournaments and seven of the last eight. He has lost just once in his career at Roland Garros.

In addition, he beat Djokovic in the finals of this tournament last year. Nadal is the clay master, and even someone as talented as Djokovic will struggle against him.

Ferrer will have to take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who just upset Roger Federer. Despite the momentum that might come from that, Ferrer is the superior clay player. Ferrer is 15-5 this season, including a victory at the Copa Claro. Tsonga, on the other hand, is just 8-4.

Ferrer will use his excellent return game to combat Tsonga's strong forehand game. Nadal will use his superior clay game, as well as his great forehand, to take care of Djokovic.

Should a Nadal vs. Ferrer finals happen, the advantage clearly goes to Nadal. The Spaniard is just so dominant on clay, and while Ferrer is good, he hasn't been able to solve Nadal.

Nadal is 19-4 in his career against Ferrer and has never lost on clay. While Ferrer is a really fast player, he will struggle against Nadal's forehand and probably lose this one in straight sets.

Williams vs. Sharapova

Maria Sharapova will most likely have to get past Victoria Azarenka, one of the best players in the world. And while Azarenka has won seven of their 12 matchups, Sharapova has won both matches on clay.

Sharapova has lost just once on clay this season, while Azarenka has never gotten past the quarterfinals of the French Open. Both are not ideally suited for the clay surface, but Sharapova has proved that she can win on clay. In addition, Sharapova is more aggressive than Azarenka and should be able to catch the Belarusian out of position on more than a few occasions.

Serena Williams will face Sara Errani in the semifinals. Eranni is the No.1 ranked Italian player, but is no match for Williams. The American is undefeated on clay this season, has won 29 matches in a row and has never lost to Eranni. She has the best serve in the sport, and while it struggled a bit against Svetlana Kuznetsova, she was able to come from behind and win. Even when Williams isn't at her best, she finds a way to win.

A Williams vs. Sharapova final would renew one of the greatest rivalries in sports today. And while these are two of the best players in the game right now, Williams just has Sharapova's number.

Williams is 12-2 overall against Sharapova. She has won 11 straight matches and has dropped just three sets in that time. She beat Sharapova on clay at the Madrid Open and is 2-0 on the surface against the Russian.

Quite simply, it's hard to imagine that Williams, playing the best tennis of her career and in the midst of dominating against Sharapova, will lose.

It may go a full three sets, but unless her serve is completely off, look for Williams to continue her incredible run.
