Sam Montgomery: How Will Texans' Newest Linebacker Fare in the Pros?
The Houston Texans finally ended the free-fall for LSU's Sam Montgomery, making him the 95th pick (Round 3, Pick 33) in the 2013 NFL draft.
Pro Outlook
Montgomery is immensely talented and was viewed as a potential first-round pick entering the 2012 season.
However, Montgomery put together a subpar junior year and later admitted to taking plays off throughout the course of the season. That lazy attitude, which was apparent when watching him, led to a drastic fall down draft boards.
Players who lack the drive to put forth a consistent effort in college very rarely turn the corner once they're collecting an NFL paycheck.
Roster Outlook
The Texans play a hybrid defense, lining up in the 3-4 in most situations but switching to a 4-3 on most obvious passing downs.
Montgomery is versatile enough to transition between linebacker and end depending on the situation. He'll help replace Connor Barwin, who signed with the Eagles this offseason.
Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilus should be the Texans' primary starters, but Montgomery is expected to be a part of the rotation.
Pick Analysis
If Montgomery can stay focused and motivated, this could prove to be a steal. However, it's rare for a player with Montgomery's red flags to suddenly turn things around.
That said, the Texans have an excellent defensive coaching staff, and if anyone can develop him, it will be Wade Phillips and his staff.
Houston may prove to be the ideal landing spot for Montgomery. Strictly from a physical standpoint, he has all the tools necessary to excel in Phillips' defense, and he should be put into favorable situations early in his career.
