Women's Tournament 2013: Ladies Set to Shine in Sweet 16

Josh BenjaminJun 8, 2018

This year's women's NCAA tournament is turning out to be a good one, and there are players who are definitely going to shine in the upcoming round who aren't named Brittney Griner.

Nothing against the 6'8" Baylor star, but to give her all of the attention while other ladies are playing some great ball is borderline criminal. How can that happen when Elena Delle Donne is turning the Delaware Blue Hens into a legit contender that could easily win it all this year?

And what about the ever-amazing Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford?

The fact is that this year's women's tourney is more than just Grinermania. And though this small handful of women may not be in the prime spotlight, there's no denying that they're going to have some great games in the regional semifinals.

Chiney Ogwumike

At 6'4", Ogwumike is Stanford's anchor in the paint. The junior posted 22.6 points and 12.9 rebounds per game for the Cardinal this season and has maintained that pace in the tournament.

In Stanford's two games, Ogwumike has averaged 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, refusing to back down from any battle. The Cardinal face a tough match against the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia.

So long as she can continue to be a rebounding machine and a beast on the interior, Ogwumike can easily guide Stanford to the next round.

Elena Delle Donne

At 6'5", Delle Donne has carried Delaware from the get-go. She has posted 33 points and 7.5 rebounds over her team's two tournament games and is a dominant force in the middle.

The No. 2 seed Kentucky Wildcats are next, so Delle Donne having a great game is key to Delaware pulling off the upset.

Given how much she has dominated the game thus far, I'm anticipating another strong performance from the Blue Hens.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis

For nearly 30 years, Geno Auriemma's excellent coaching has made the Connecticut Huskies women's basketball team a perennial contender. He has seven championships on his resume and an overall record of 834-133, and his team this year is led by a fine scorer in Mosqueda-Lewis.

She is averaging 22 points and 4.5 rebounds in the tournament this year, and she'll only continue to lead top-seeded Connecticut against No. 4 seed Maryland in the women's Sweet 16.

So long as she can keep up her strong effort, Auriemma and the Huskies should be in for another lengthy tournament run and perhaps an eighth championship.
