Report: Biggest Spenders in Men's CBB 🤑
Boston College (8) vs. Georgia Tech (9)
When: Thursday, March 14 at 12 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPNU/ACC Network
Boston College (15-16, 7-11 ACC) doesn't do anything particularly well. The Eagles rank 192nd in the nation in points per game, 140th in field-goal percentage, 219th in assists per contest and 299th in rebounds per game. They also rank 286th in opponents' field-goal percentage, via TeamRankings.com.
But the Eagles are also on a three-game winning streak, including a 74-72 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday to end the regular season.
Georgia Tech (16-14, 6-12 ACC) may have a better overall record than Boston College, but the Yellow Jackets have had an ugly stretch since their Jan. 2 victory over Chattanooga. Since that win, Georgia Tech has gone 6-12.
The Yellow Jackets rank 40th in the nation in opponents' field-goal percentage, but the Eagles shot 55 percent against them in Saturday's victory. Four different Eagles scored in double figures.
I think Boston College beats Georgia Tech again in the ACC tournament.
NC State (5) vs. Virginia Tech (12)
When: Thursday, March 14 at 2 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPNU/ACC Network
The last time NC State (22-9, 11-7 ACC) faced Virginia Tech (13-18, 4-14 ACC), the Wolfpack almost lost. In the 90-86 overtime thriller, NC State shot 47 percent, but gave up 17 offensive rebounds.
In fact, NC State ranks 250th in the country in opponents' offensive rebounding percentage, via TeamRankings.com. The Wolfpack allowed 12 offensive rebounds against Florida State in the 71-67 loss on Saturday.
Still, Virginia Tech is on a nightmare stretch. The Hokies have lost 12 of their last 15 games, including a 90-79 loss to Wake Forest on Sunday. It's hard to win ballgames when you score 70.1 points per contest (109th in the nation) and have trouble stopping opponents, as well.
C.J. Leslie and company should win this matchup.
Maryland (7) vs. Wake Forest (10)
When: Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPNU/ACC Network
How Wake Forest beat then-No. 2 Miami (FL), I'll never know.
The Demon Deacons (13-17, 6-12 ACC) have lost 11 of their last 15 games, including two losses to No. 12 seed Virginia Tech. They also suffered an 86-60 defeat to Maryland on Feb. 2, as well as a 67-57 loss on March 2.
Maryland (20-11, 8-10 ACC) has talent, but the team has been plagued by turnovers and inconsistent play this season. Case in point: The Terrapins rank third in rebounds per game, 39th in assists per game, 31st in field-goal percentage and ninth in opponents' field-goal percentage, but have lost 11 games this season, including dropping 10 in their last 17 games.
Maryland came into Sunday's 61-58 overtime loss to Virginia averaging 15.2 turnovers, 298th in the country. The Terrapins proceeded to turn the ball over 12 times.
Wake Forest probably won't pose too much of a threat to Maryland, but that's not exactly saying much, either.
Florida State (6) vs. Clemson (11)
When: Thursday, March 14 at 9 p.m. ET
Watch: ESPNU/ACC Network
It's hard to imagine Clemson (13-17, 5-13 ACC) beating Florida State in the tournament. The Tigers lost both regular-season matchups against the Seminoles and they lost six straight games to end the regular season.
Clemson's stats this season speak for themselves. The Tigers rank 301st in points per game, 219th in field-goal percentage, 229th in rebounds per contest and 305th in assists per game. They also rank 93rd in opponents' field-goal percentage, via TeamRankings.com.
At 17-14 (9-9 ACC), the Seminoles aren't exactly world-beaters, either. But three victories in their last four games—including a 71-67 win over NC State—shows they still have some life.
Look for Florida State senior guard Michael Snaer—who posted 17 points against NC State—to come ready to play.
