Notre Dame vs. St. John's Video: Watch Fight Break Out in Big East Battle

Big East basketball has featured some intense competition this season, but emotions boiled over in Notre Dame’s 66-40 victory over St. John’s Tuesday night in South Bend. 

With under two minutes to play and the Fighting Irish holding a 26-point lead, Red Storm swingman Sir’Dominic Pointer and Notre Dame forward Cameron Biedscheid got into a skirmish during a dead ball. 

Pointer then escalated the confrontation, immediately swinging and connecting with Biedscheid’s face. Players from both teams immediately jumped in to tear the two young freshman apart.

Both players were assessed technicals and ejected after the altercation:

Biedscheid finished the night with no points after 10 minutes in a reserve role, while Pointer contributed seven points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in 34 minutes of action.

While Pointer’s well-rounded effort was impressive, his 2-of-6 shooting night was emblematic of a poor offensive performance from the entire St. John’s team. 

The Red Storm shot just 30.4 percent from the field for the game, ending the night with just 40 points.

With Notre Dame likely headed to the NCAA tournament, and St. John’s lacking the necessary resume to receive a ticket to the Big Dance, there were multiple areas of frustration for the Red Storm on Tuesday night.

The fight showed a lack of maturity in the way the team dealt with an unfavorable result and added another reason for head coach Steve Lavin to be disappointed with his team.

It was an ugly end to a lopsided game.
