Matches That Could Headline WrestleMania XXX
We all know how big WrestleMania XXIX will be, but WrestleMania XXX has to be the biggest ever.
As reported here on Bleacher Report (via Wrestling Observer Newsletter), creative have already begun thinking about who will headline next yearโs Showcase of the Immortals.
The idea of Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock, a dream match for many, has apparently been discussed as the showโs main event.
However, the WWE is dynamic to say the least, so expect many changes in plan between now and then.
The main event of WWE's biggest ever event would need to feature stars who can still put on a good match. More importantly, they need to feature huge draws, and the pairing needs to represent something.
WWE have a year from now to arrange a spectacular main event befitting the scope of the event.
The following are five matches that fit that criteria.ย
John Cena vs. the Undertaker
1 of 5The Undertakerโs WrestleMania streak seems unbreakable, but if thereโs one star who can make the audience believe otherwise, it's John Cena.
Cena has arguably accomplished more than anyone in the history of the company.
Heโs a 10-time WWE champion, two-time Royal Rumble winner, overcame every adversary that heโs been presented with and heโs been one of the companyโs top stars for the better part of a decade.
John Cena is WWEโs Superman. Itโs been said about him pejoratively for years, but itโs true.
The Undertaker, meanwhile, has been untouchable at WrestleMania for over 20 years.
To further bolster the box office draw, WWE could add a stipulation. WWE championship vs. career, perhaps?
There have beenย rumorsย (PWInsider via wrestlinginc.com)ย of a Punk vs. Undertaker match for this yearโs โMania, which would be a terrific match, but Cena vs. Undertaker could be one of the biggest ever.ย
CM Punk vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
2 of 5Weโve already gotten Rock vs. Cena, so the next dream match to tick off the list is Austin vs. Punk.
Punk is one of WWEโs biggest stars today. Austin is arguably the WWEโs biggest star ever.
Their match sells itself. Austin is a beer-drinking redneck. Punk is straight edge. Their story writes itself.
If Stone Cold returns and is on his game, we could get some of the best promosย we'veย ever seen courtesy of these two.
With Austinโs age as it is (heโll be 49) itโs doubtful the two could work a five-star match.
However, the combination of styles would be interesting, and the crowds involvement would make it feel extraordinary.
The story would be great, the match would be fun and the feud could be iconic, thereโd be no better place for it to culminate than WrestleMania XXX.
CM Punk vs. John Cena
3 of 5The last two slides both involved a megastar who would work a part-time schedule at best.
Itโs becoming a trend in the WWE to have major events headlined by part-time talent, but it doesnโt have to be so.
As Punk rightly said in his documentary, โThe best good guy fights the best bad guy at the best show of the yearโ.
WrestleMania is the biggest event of the year. Punk is the WWEโs top heel and Cena is its top babyface.
The two already have a storied history, but if we get a year of them not touching each other it would still feel fresh for WrestleMania XXX, where WWE's two biggest stars can collide.ย
Cena vs. Orton
4 of 5It really is shocking that we havenโt seen this match headline a WrestleMania yet.
Randy Ortonโs current position in the company is surprisingly low, but it wouldnโt take him very long to return to the top.
Although CM Punk is currently the No. 2 guy, Randy Orton and John Cena are the Rock/Austin and Hart/Michaels of their generation.
Both have a ridiculous amount of world championships to their namesโa combined 21 between them.
Before Ortonโs second wellness policy violation, he was undoubtedly one of WWE'sย poster boys, along with John Cena.
Orton has suffered somewhat of a fall from grace, but as mentioned, his character has enough credentials that he could quickly become a legitimate main eventer again.
Orton and Cena represent their generation, and it would make sense for them to square off at the 30th anniversary of WrestleMania.
Rock vs. Austin IV
5 of 5Withย Lesnar vs. Rock rumored to main event next year's WrestleMania, it seems like WWE donโt mind having two part-timers close the show of shows.ย
If thatโs the case, then Rock vs. Austin would be the biggest match they could possibly book.
Austin and Rock have already had three WrestleMania matches against each other, and thatโs why another one would make sense.
To contemporary fans, Rock vs. Austin is the most iconic pairing in the history of the business.ย
Many older fans could rightfully argue that there are pairings whose legendary status exceed that of Rock and Austin; Hogan and Andre, for instance. ย
However, to most of WWE's millions of fans, there is no match more significant thanย Rock vs. Austin.
A match between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock is the best way WWE can represent their history, which is why it shouldn't be discounted as the main event for WrestleMania XXX.
