Seattle Seahawks' Mock Draft, Apr. 8, '09: First-Round Trade Changes Things

In my last mock draft, I had the Seahawks taking Matt Stafford. While Stafford would be a good pick for the future, something the Seahawks don’t have at QB. Stafford will go first to the Lions because they need someone to help out up there.

The Rams at two take OT Jason Smith. At three the Chiefs take LB Aaron Curry. Now here I have an interesting scenario. The Seahawks can use a good young QB for the future but don’t want to spend the top money to do so.

The Browns have the fifth overall pick and Seattle would be smart to make a trade with the Browns to move back one. Here’s the trade.

Cleveland sends there first round pick (fifth overall) and QB Brady Quinn who has experience in the league and won’t hurt the Seahawks cap at all. Seattle Sends there first round pick (fourth overall). Now let’s say that does happen.

Cleveland needs a DE/OLB like Brian Orakpo or a WR like Michael Crabtree depending on what happens to Stallworth and Edwards. Now for Seattle’s pick at five and the rest of the draft.

Seahawks' first-round pick, fifth overall: DT B.J Raji-Boston College

The Seahawks get their future QB in the form of Brady Quinn now they can help the defense even more. Yes the Seahawks did sign Colin Cole and traded for Cory Redding. Cole isn’t and every down starter like Raji and Redding is going to play at DE not DT.

So with that being said the Seahawks can use a talented, young DT like Raji on the defensive line.

The 'Hawks will not take an OT because there is no place for him to play. Locklear and Jones are still there and the Seahawks are going for a win-now mentality. So they get a good QB to mold behind Hasselbeck that won’t break the bank and a great DT in Raji

Seahawks' second-round pick, 37th overall: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey-Maryland

The Seahawks need a young, explosive target for Hasselbeck and in the future for Quinn. The Seahawks signed T.J Houshmandzadeh to give Seattlea new number one WR. Sense the Seahawks won’t take Crabtree in the first round they can afford to wait till the second round to take the better WR in Heyward-Bey.

He ran a 4.3 in the 40 at the combine and that’s the kind of WR the Seahawks need to stretch the field. With Houshmandzadeh, hopefully Branch, Burleson, Carlson and now Heyward-Bey the Seahawks offence will be alive and well if they all stay healthy.

Seahawks' third-round pick 68th overall: OLB Marcus Freeman-Ohio State

The Seahawks traded OLB Julian Peterson to the Lions for Cory Redding so they are going to need someone to fill that hole. Tim Ruskell has always been good at finding great talent in the later rounds of the draft and he does it again with Freeman. He’ll do a lot better behind the new defensive line.

With the trio of Hill, Tatupu and now Freeman will be a good young LB core. Who knows maybe he’ll be as good at Tatupu in a few years. But it’s a great value pick and it also fills a hole that NEEDS to be filled.

Seahawks' fourth-round pick 105th overall: FS Rashad Johnson-Alabama

Johnson will add talented depth in the Seahawks secondary. He also has a very good chance of getting to start and replace Brian Russell at FS. That way Deon Grant can move back to his normal role at SS.

Now Johnson might not be the long term answer but he’ll be great for this year. Maybe Seattle will draft Taylor Mays next year.

Seahawks fifth round pick 137th overall: RB Mike Goodson-Texas A&M

The Seahawks have Julius Jones and lost Mo Morris. They are going to need another Maurice Morris and that’s Mike Goodson. Jones will get the Start and lose it during the season again to Goodson. Duckett just gets the short yards and goal-line touchdown.

Seahawks' sixth-round pick 178th overall: G Jaimie Thomas-Maryland

This is just a depth pick. The Seahawks can never have too much depth on the offensive line.

Seahawks' seventh-round pick 213th overall: T Lydon Murtha-Nebraska

Another depth pick. The same as the Thomas pick. Seattle can use all the depth the can get on the offensive line.

This fills the remaining holes on the Seahawks roster. At DT they get a great, young DT in B.J Raji and also acquire the future Seahawks QB in Brady Quinn with out spending a lot of cap room to get him.

They fill there remaining WR hole with a WR in Heyward-Bey that can really stretch the field and help out the offence greatly. Freeman takes the place of Julian Peterson who was traded to Detroit. The rest of the players taken for the Seahawks are depth picks.
