Stable Quarterback Comes to Chicago

mike lialiosApr 4, 2009

The one thought escaping everyone after the Cutler trade is that a talented quarterback brings talent at the receiver position to town.

Mushin Muhammmad said it best: "Chicago is where receivers go to die."

Think of the mentality of the front office alone when you can't stabilize the QB position. Marty Booker has a Pro Bowl season, and the next year he's traded for Adewale Ogunleye (great move by the way).

Bernard Berrian has a breakout season, and he leaves for the Vikings after some nice circus catches. No matter what the bears were offering, he was gone, thinking to himself, "No way is it going to be any better next year with the QB situation in Chicago."

Bobby Engram is a solid receiver in Seattle again (stable QB situation). Justin Gage, big target new school receiver, gone to Tennessee (played well last year catching balls from Collins).

Mark Bradley, a young talent you cant see it Chicago, goes to Kansas city, and even throws a bomb for a TD; who knew the kid can throw!

Bobby Wade was nice receiver who was shipped out of town because he couldn't field punts; decent receiver though.

The list is endless. My point is, Cutler made a lot of guys happy in Denver. Branden Marshall will not do what he did with Cutler. Stokley will not see any balls like he did with Cutler. Orton can't keep a play alive long enough to scope the field.

Eddie Royal? Enjoy your 400 yard season.

Sheffler? You'll make some plays, but you'll be aching come seasons end. Orton will lay you out underneath for a five yard gain.

So to everyone in Denver who looks at this trade on paper and says, "Picks and Orton, we got the Bears good," you lost the most important and difficult piece to find, a talent at the QB position.

It was nice while you had them, but Marshall and Royal will be running for the hills once their contracts are up. Now the Bears can attract free agent talent at the receiver position. You broke the cardinal rule: Never underestimate what Cutler was worth to enticing new talent.

Your team is now four years behind where they were a year ago.
