Chicago Bears' Earl Bennett: The Biggest Winner in the Jay Cutler Trade

Michael WagnerApr 3, 2009

It has been a day since the Chicago Bears traded for quarterback Jay Cutler, and for many Bears fans and players it has yet to sink in that they have stabilized their quarterback position for years to come.

This trade has made the Bears a better offensive team and the Bears have benefited from the the trade, but I do think there is one person who has benefited the most out of anyone, Earl Bennett.

Earl Bennett was drafted in the third by the Chicago Bears in the 2008 draft but battled injuries and the inability to crack the Bears' receiver rotation.

The biggest problem that faced Bennett was that he entered the draft after his junior year and many times that can present some problems in the transition for college to the pros.

The reason that this trade most benefits Earl Bennett is that he and Jay Cutler are already familiar with one another.

When Jay Cutler was a senior at Vanderbilt, Bennett was coming into his first season with the Commodores. In that season, Bennett caught 79 passes, compiled 876 yards receiving and nine touchdowns (most in his collegiate career).

Bennett accounted for almost 43 percent of Cutler's touchdown passes and over 28 percent of his passing yards.

When Bennett had his pro-day last year Cutler came to the Vanderbilt practice facility and threw for him showing that Cutler has plenty of respect for the guy and that he has great chemistry for him.

You would have to imagine that Cutler is very comfortable with Bennett and will look to him first until he gains chemistry with his other receivers.

They know each other's tendencies, and if that chemistry can be rekindled in Chicago the Bears might have a dynamic passing duo for many years to come.

Bennett is young and still raw but if anyone can bring the best out of him it is his former teammate Jay Cutler, making him the biggest winner of Thursday's trade.
