Two Trades the Cleveland Browns Should Explore

Nick FinkApr 3, 2009

The 2009 NFL Draft is 22 days away, and now that Jay Cutler has been traded, we have a pretty good idea of what teams will have which picks. The Browns currently have six picks, three of which are the first two rounds.

This is good for a team that has many glaring holes on its defense and some holes in its offense. The Browns biggest need by far is Defensive Back, shortly followed by Linebackers and Wide Receivers.

So it stands to reason with this many holes one or two impact players will not fix the Browns roster. This leads me to the first thing the Brownies need to do before the draft or on draft day and that is call the Denver Broncos.

After trading Jay Cutler yesterday the Broncos now sit with the 12th and 18th pick in the draft and rumor has it that Josh McDaniels likes Mark Sanchez a lot. The problem for the Broncos is that there are a couple of other teams that like him too: the Bucs, Jets, and the Jags.

So to get Mark, the Broncos might need to move up in the draft, sitting seven picks ahead of Denver is the Browns.

This is a trade that should at the very least be discussed: The Browns trade Shawn Rogers, their first-round pick(fifth overall) and their fourth-round pick (104th overall) and next year's third- and fifth-round pick for Tony Scheffler, their first-round picks(12th and 18th overall) and the third-round pick they received from Chicago (84th overall).

This is a good trade for both teams the Broncos would be in great position to get Mark Sanchez, they would be getting a Pro Bowl defensive tackle in Shawn Rogers and they would gain the extra pick this year and next.

The Browns would get Tony Scheffler, who is a pretty good receiving tight end, which they need with the loss of Kellen Winslow, and would have seven picks in the draft, five of them being in the first 84 picks.

The second trade is one that has already been rumored and might pick up some steam with the release of Plaxico Burress today: the trading of Braylon Edwards to the New York Giants.

I believe the Browns should trade Braylon to the Giants for Mario Manningham and the third- and fifth-round picks they got from New Orleans (45th and 151st overall).

If the Browns make these two trades, the would have nine picks. Six would be in the first 84 and even better, five of them would be in the first 50 picks.

This could dramatically change the Cleveland Browns, with the 12th and 18thpick they can get Jeremy Maclin, Malcolm Jenkins, Robert Ayers, Tyson Jackson or even Percy Harvin. Then with the three picks they have in the second round they can gain those extra pieces that they need to fix all of the holes on this Browns roster. This is what in my opinion the Browns need to at least attempt to do to fix this team.
