Packers Center Jeff Saturday Announces Plans to Retire After Pro Bowl

Ethan GrantJun 8, 2018

Green Bay Packers center Jeff Saturday has been the standard at his position for well over a decade. After the Pro Bowl ends on Sunday afternoon, it appears the NFL will need to find a new namesake for that label.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, Saturday will retire from the league after 14 seasons following the conclusion of the 2013 Pro Bowl. He appeared on a radio interview with 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis on Friday morning, where he announced the news:

"We’ll finish it with sunsets in Hawaii and call it a much better career than I would have anticipated," Saturday said on The Grady and Big Joe Show.

Saturday had the honor of playing with two of the best QBs in this era—first with Peyton Manning in Indianapolis until the end of 2011 and this year with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.

Starting his career with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 1998, Saturday didn't find a permanent home until 1999, when he stuck with the Indianapolis Colts. He remained there for the majority of his career, and was a member of the Super Bowl XLI championship team following the 2006 season.

The 37-year-old also started Super Bowl XLIV for the Colts, a game that they would lose to the New Orleans Saints.

The six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro selection didn't have a ceremonious end to the regular season. He was benched in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith in Week 16 and for the Packers' two-round appearance in the 2013 playoffs.

After watching from the sidelines as the Packers were eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers, it seems Saturday is ready to do something else with his life besides playing football.

He'll finish his career with over 200 starts along the offensive line for the Colts and the Packers. Exceeding expectations after going undrafted, Saturday will likely go down as a Colts legend and NFL all-time great.
