Tar Heel's Drive For 5
In life, we try to reach the pinnacle of greatest or the summit of the mountain. Sometimes its a small mountain and sometimes it can be Mount Everest. Yet, there are groups of people or groups that reach this achievement. The University of North Carolina is one of them.
UNC has for a long time been one of the most dominant basketball programs in the NCAA. From Jordan, to Carter to now even Hansbrough, the team has earned its respect. The Tar-Heel's have won 4 championships so far, 1957, 1982, 1993, and most recently in 2005. The quest for 5 starts now.
The Tar-Heel's have once again made it into the final four. As we avid sports fans all know, this is no easy task. This year, the teams are better and there are no cinderella's. It's the best teams in the country facing off in epic duels to decide the champion. This year it is the Goliath Tar Heel's against the smaller Wildcats of Villanova.
After Scottie Reynolds game winner last week against the Panthers, the Wildcats are bringing not only momentum but a sense that they can beat another dominant team. Villanova was able to defeat Sam Young and Co-Big East Player of the Year DeJuan Blair. Yet, there toughest challenge will come this weekend against the might of Psycho T and Ty Lawson.
North Carolina has always had a knack for creating teams out of nothing and making it work. This season has been no exception. Coach Roy Williams has once again proven that he is still one of the best coaches in the college ranks. As usual, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington have been dominant all season long. Why else would have Lawson won ACC Player of the Year. Yet, there are a few players not usual mentioned that have become role players as of late.
One of these players would have to be Ed Davis. Although he comes off the bench, Davis and proved to be ready. In all 4 tournament games, he is averaging 20 minutes a game, 8.3 points a game and 5 rebounds per game. If you cannot call that production then I don't know what your watching.
Another unsung hero of the Mighty Rams would be Danny Green. Green has been one of the key components for the Tar Heel's starting rotation down the stretch. In the tournament, he is averaging 30 minutes per game, 13.5 points per game and 6 rebounds per game. Yet, his greatest performance so far was the 18 points he put up against Blake Griffin and the Sooners in last week's Elite 8.
The last player that needs to step up big once again to get North Carolina back into the Championship would be Bobby Frasor. Now most people might think I am crazy to put Frasor as one of the players to watch for but you need to know why. Frasor might not be the key star of the Tar Heel's, but he gives it his all every time he is on the court. When Lawson comes off, Frasor has stepped up all season to playing the point and keeping the game under control. Watch for him to make some noise for his team.
So here's to the men of baby blue. Your quest for number 5 will not be forgotten and if Ellington and Lawson get on a roll then, well the title is ours. But for Villanova's sake, lets just let them have a chance. The have worked hard to get here and they deserve it. Yet, the better team always comes out victorious and this time it will be the UNC Tar Heel's.
