Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears...Dream or Nightmare?

Joshua TroyerApr 3, 2009

Now that the drama is done and the cards have fallen, let's discuss Jay Cutler as the quarterback of the Chicago Bears.

At first sight, anyone can look and say the Chicago Bears are now Super Bowl contenders.  Let's face it, the NFC is the lesser of the two conferences with an easier route to the big game.

A difference maker at quarterback was all this team was missing, wasn't it? Well sure the defense got shredded on a regular basis last year, but that wouldn't happen if the offense could maintain some stability.

Jay Cutler is that stability...or is he?  He's athletic, charismatic and he's got a rocket launcher for an arm.  He went to the Pro Bowl last year, and he doesn't throw interceptions when the game is on the line. He does fumble, but lucky for him, the whistle seems to blow his way.

The question to ask yourself about Cutler has nothing to do with his ability.  That's not even up for debate. There is an important question to ask. How will a quarterback, who takes business decisions personally, react to the ever changing pressure of the city of Chicago?

Then there's a follow-up question. Is the chance that he won't handle it well worth the current team leader and two first-round draft picks?

Kyle Orton may not have the appearance of Jay Cutler, but his teammates had his back.  What does this move do to the cohesiveness of this unit? Is adding a wonderfully talented player worth messing up the chemistry of a team? See the Dallas Cowboys.

It's a sunny fantasy right now in Chicago, but will the skies become cloudy, the rainbow become lightning and the nightmare a reality? Only time will tell.
