Which NFL Team Will Land Jay Cutler?

Michael WhooleyApr 1, 2009

With the news from Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen stating that quarterback Jay Cutler is available in a trade, it makes you wonder not only where he will go, but what kind of fantasy football impact the move will have on the upcoming season.

With that in mind, I'm going to give you three teams who would be considered the favorites to land Cutler and how both sides would be affected.

--------------------

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns seem to be the favorite because they have a quarterback who could play for Denver in Week One with either Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn.  To me, I think Quinn has a lot of promise as an NFL quarterback.

Not to mention he’d be playing in an offense similar to what he played in in college under Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. If the Broncos get Quinn, I think he becomes a top 10 fantasy quarterback.

The Broncos have two young stud receivers in Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal and also have a bunch of running backs that they just picked up.

If Cutler goes to Cleveland, then I think he drops in value, possibly lower than that of Quinn. If the Broncos decide to take Anderson, then I put Cutler slightly ahead of Anderson. There isn’t enough offensive talent on the Browns team to help Cutler and Eric Mangini likes to play a running style offense.

You just have to ignore last year with the Jets because there was no way Mangini would stand up to Brett Favre. Anderson would be lower than Quinn at Denver because Quinn fits the mold that head coach Josh McDaniels likes in a quarterback. Plus, I feel like Quinn is a better overall quarterback.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I don’t see how Tampa Bay is in contention unless the Denver is comfortable handing the quarterback duties to Chris Simms heading into 2009. I think if the Bucs got Cutler, his value stays the same on your draft board.

With Antonio Bryant there, plus a guy like Kellen Winslow and running back Derrick Ward, the Bucs will have the weapons to move the ball if they have the right quarterback. I would then make Simms a QB2 in fantasy football, above what Luke McCown’svalue would have been as the No.1 option in Tampa.

As long as Simms is fully healthy, he will put up decent weeks with the talent he’d have around him in Denver. I just don’t think he would be a consistent point scorer for you.

Detroit Lions

Because Tampa Bay had trade negotiations with the Broncos when this thing with Cutler started, I don’t see how the Lions would be able to jump in.

The Bucs first round draft pick is one spot higher than the Lions second first round draft pick, and I don’t see the Lions putting in the first overall pick.

The only way they would have a better offer is if they throw in their second round pick, 33rd overall because the Buccaneers don’t have a second round draft pick.

The Broncos again would have to be comfortable with Simms. Cutler’s value with the Lions would probably be a little bit lower than with the Broncos, because he would have a terrible offensive line in front of him.

It would be great to see Cutler throwing to Calvin Johnson though, whose value would skyrocket with the addition of Cutler.
