Updated MLB Power Rankings Heading into the New Year
It's been a busy few days since the last edition of these power rankings came out.
Nick Swisher, Raul Ibanez, Cody Ross and Francisco Liriano all found new homes as free agents, and the Pirates dealt closer Joel Hanrahan to the Boston Red Sox in a six-player deal.
The resulting moves didn't exactly shake up the top of the rankings, but there was enough shuffling to justify an updated look at the offseason rankings.
Here is where every team stands with the new year just around the corner as we move ever closer to pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training.

30. Houston Astros (Previous: 30)
1 of 30Offseason Overview
The Astros could look to add some rotational depth after already bringing on Phil Humber and Alex White to bolster the staff.
Offensively, they appear set to open the season with the lineup they have, with veteran Carlos Pena the only major addition. He'll serve as the team's DH during what will be its first season in the AL.

29. Miami Marlins (Previous: 29)
2 of 30Offseason Overview
The Marlins couldn't be further from where they were at this point last season in every fathomable way. Talent, outlook, fan excitement. You name it, the Marlins are lacking in it.
The team could still look to move starter Ricky Nolasco, as the free-agent-to-be will likely be playing elsewhere by the end of 2013 one way or another. Aside from that, take a good look at this roster, because it's likely to be the one the Marlins trot out this coming season.

3 of 30Offseason Overview
The pitching-starved Twins have added Vance Worley, Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey to aid Scott Diamond in improving what was the AL's worst rotation last season.
Offensively, they'll have to figure out how to replace Ben Revere and Denard Span in the outfield. Keep an eye on Chris Parmelee, as he could be one of the breakout players of 2013 if he can take the next step.

27. Colorado Rockies (Previous: 27)
4 of 30Offseason Overview
The Rockies have done next to nothing this offseason to improve what was the worst pitching staff in baseball last season. Reliever Wilton Lopez was acquired from the Astros, and Jeff Francis was re-signed.
Aside from that, they'll hope that healthy seasons from guys like Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin can turn things around.
They still have one of the better lineups in the NL, and getting Troy Tulowitzki back will certainly help, but will it be enough to offset their pitching staff?

The Cubs' signing of Edwin Jackson will steal the headlines this offseason, but the team has made a number of midlevel moves that should make it better for 2013 without sacrificing its rebuilding mentality.
Third base remains a major hole, with Ian Stewart and Luis Valbuena expected to platoon as of now, and there is not much in the way of alternative options on the market.

Their payroll constraints have limited their offseason activity, but Collin Cowgill has a chance to be a solid low-cost contributor in the outfield. John Buck has decent power while he keeps the catching position warm for d'Arnaud.

8 of 30Remaining Offseason Outlook
Despite the trade of Shin-Soo Choo, the Indians appear to be an improved team this offseason. The Choo trade brought them a promising young starter in Trevor Bauer and a replacement outfielder in speedster Drew Stubbs.
They also signed Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds and selected Arizona Fall League MVP Chris McGuiness in the Rule 5 draft. It may not be enough to contend for the division title, but they appear to be a better team than last year on the surface.

The Phillies landed Ben Revere and Michael Young in trades so far this offseason, and they signed non-tendered Nationals starter John Lannan to fill the fifth starter spot. Still, it's safe to say it's been a quieter offseason than most expected for the Phillies.

However, a bottom third of the lineup of Eduardo Nunez, Brett Gardner and Austin Romine doesn't look great. Their depth has taken a hit with the departures of Raul Ibanez, Eric Chavez and Andruw Jones. At least on the surface, they look to have taken a step back from the end of last season.
