MLB Power Rankings: Where Teams Stand After Josh Hamilton, R.A. Dickey Moves

Joel ReuterDec 16, 2012

A lot has happened since the last round of MLB power rankings, put out just after the winter meetings wrapped up back on December 7.

Top free agents Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez have all found new homes, and a pair of blockbuster trades significantly changed things for five teams.

While a number of the major chips have fallen, there are still plenty of impact moves to be made between now and the start of spring training with top free agents like Kyle Lohse, Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher, among others, all still without homes.

Taking into account each team's current roster as is, here is a look at how I'd rank all 30 teams here in the middle of December following a number of major moves.

*Note: Rosters taken from MLBDepthCharts.com.

30. Houston Astros (Previous: 30)

1 of 30

Offseason Overview

As one would expect out of a rebuilding team, the Houston Astros have been quiet on the free-agent market so far this offseason, and aside from adding Carlos Pena to serve as DH, they likely won't do much between now and Opening Day.

Alex White was acquired in a trade with the Rockies, and he'll join free agent Phil Humber as new additions to the team's rotation. Hector Ambriz is slated to assume the closer's role after Wilton Lopez was moved in the White deal.

29. Miami Marlins (Previous: 29)

2 of 30

Offseason Overview

With a gutted roster, the Miami Marlins appear headed for a long season in 2013, as there will likely be an influx of young talent that sees big league action.

The team has a solid young rotation and one of the best sluggers in the game in Giancarlo Stanton, but the Marlins will have their work cut out for them just to avoid finishing in last place.

28. Minnesota Twins (Previous: 27)

3 of 30

Offseason Overview

The Minnesota Twins' offseason goal was to improve their rotation, and while they've not made huge moves, they have added a pair of solid right-handers in Kevin Correia and Vance Worley to join Scott Diamond atop the rotation.

Denard Span and Ben Revere were moved in trades that landed a pair of impressive prospects in Alex Meyer and Trevor May, along with Worley, as the outfield will have a different look in Minnesota this season.

27. Chicago Cubs (Previous: 26)

4 of 30

Offseason Overview

Chicago Cubs fans were teased with a reported signing of Anibal Sanchez, only to watch him re-sign with the Tigers, as the offseason action in Chicago remains a slew of unimpressive moves.

Nate Schierholtz was brought in to play right field, allowing Brett Jackson more time to develop, but aside from that, the lineup will look the same. Scott Feldman and Scott Baker were brought in for rotational depth, but neither of those guys is Anibal Sanchez.

26. Colorado Rockies (Previous: 24)

Offseason Overview

The Colorado Rockies had the worst pitching staff in baseball last season by most statistical measures, yet they have done nothing to this point to address their rotation.

Healthy seasons from Jorge De La Rosa, Jhoulys Chacin and Juan Nicasio could make all the difference, and getting superstar shortstop Troy Tulowitzki back is also a major addition, but it may not be enough.

25. Cleveland Indians (Previous: 28)

6 of 30

Offseason Overview

The Cleveland Indians finally pulled the trigger on a deal many were expecting for some time, as they moved Shin-Soo Choo in a three-team deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds.

Their return on the deal was Reds center fielder Drew Stubbs and Diamondbacks pitching prospect Trevor Bauer, and it's a deal that has potential to be a great one.

Arizona Fall League MVP Chris McGuiness was taken from the Rangers in the Rule V draft, and he'll have a chance to stick as the team's DH. Mark Reynolds was also added to fill the first-base void, as the Indians lineup looks to be improved from last season.

24. Seattle Mariners (Previous: 22)

7 of 30

Offseason Overview

It's been a quiet offseason thus far for a Seattle Mariners team that desperately needed to bolster its offense. That is, unless you consider Jason Bay to be the answer to their problems (he's not).

They'll benefit from an influx of talented young players this season, but most of that will be on the pitching side of things, and the team will have to find a way to add some punch between now and the start of the season.

23. New York Mets (Previous: 23)

8 of 30

Offseason Overview

The New York Mets have officially dealt R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays in a deal that will bring them top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud as well as catcher John Buck and pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard and another prospect (h/t C. Trent Rosecrans, CBS Sports).

All that was missing was an extension with Dickey and the Jays, and that hurdle was cleared earlier in the day on Monday:

"

BREAKING - Sources: R.A. Dickey reaches agreement w/@bluejays on 2-year, $25M extension (pending physical) » es.pn/TWjKPZ

— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) December 17, 2012"

While no team ever wants to move the reigning Cy Young winner, the Mets appear to have gotten terrific value for the 38-year-old Dickey, and the move appears to be a win for both sides. As for 2013 impact, d'Arnaud should get a crack at the starting job out of camp. It's a step back overall for this coming season but could be several steps forward long-term.

9 of 30

Offseason Overview

The San Diego Padres have taken steps to improve their rotation this season in adding Jason Marquis and Tyson Ross, but they could still use another impact starter alongside Edinson Volquez and Clayton Richard.

They remain a team headed in the right direction, though, as they've built a solid core at the big league level and have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball with a number of potential impact players pushing ever closer to the big leagues.

The Chicago White Sox's big move of the offseason came shortly after the season ended, as they declined their option on right-hander Jake Peavy but then brought him back on a two-year, $29 million deal.

The team also brought in Jeff Keppinger to play third base and appear to be ready to hand catching duties over to Tyler Flowers with A.J. Pierzynski likely departing in free agency.

Offseason Overview

The Pittsburgh Pirates should continue to reap the benefits of a strong farm system this coming season, as Starling Marte will likely slide into an everyday role and pitchers Gerrit Cole, Jeff Locke and Kyle McPherson should all see time in the rotation.

Russell Martin was signed away from the Yankees, and he'll bring solid power and a good game-calling skills to a young staff. They may have overpaid a bit, but he'll prove worth it if he can help smooth the transition of those pitchers.

Offseason Overview

The Milwaukee Brewers have been silent so far this offseason, with an early December trade for Tampa Bay Rays reliever Burke Badenhop the only significant addition the team has made.

They could look to add a veteran starter to follow Yovani Gallardo in what is a relatively unproven rotation and will likely look to add a bullpen arm or two as well, but for the most part, they appear to be ready to enter the season with the team they currently have.

Offseason Overview

The Boston Red Sox have been busy this offseason, using the money freed up in their blockbuster deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to reshape the lineup.

Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli* and Jonny Gomes were all brought aboard on multi-year deals, Stephen Drew was brought in on a one-year deal, David Ortiz was re-signed and the pitching staff was bolstered with the additions of Ryan Dempster and Koji Uehara. Offseason Overview

The Kansas City Royals have completely overhauled their rotation for the season ahead, with the big move coming when they shipped a package of prospects highlighted by Wil Myers to the Rays for James Shields and Wade Davis, the latter of whom will be moved back to a starting role after thriving in the bullpen last year.

Time will tell if it was worth giving up Myers, but the Royals are at least in a position now to make a run at contention in the AL Central.

If nothing else, top prospects Mike Olt, Jurickson Profar and Martin Perez will have a chance to make an impact, and they could wind up making a bigger impact than anyone they could look to sign at this point.

The team also dealt for Rangers third baseman Michael Young, as they hope he'll be able to bring more production to the table than Placido Polanco did last season. The Diamondbacks have been involved in a pair of three-team trades so far this offseason, shipping out outfielder Chris Young and pitcher Trevor Bauer, among others, and bringing in Cliff Pennington, Heath Bell and Didi Gregorius.

Pennington will serve as a stopgap option at shortstop until Gregorius is capable of stepping in, as the team has addressed its biggest need. A full season of Manny Machado will be a big addition in itself, and it should be only a matter of time before fellow top prospect Dylan Bundy is in the big leagues to stay after a brief cameo last September. Bringing back Nate McLouth was a smart move, as he proved a nice spark last season.

Myers, along with fellow new additions Yunel Escobar and James Loney, should make for a better Rays offense this coming season. Losing Shields hurts, but the team has options to replace him, as Alex Cobb and Chris Archer will battle for the open rotation spot.

The Red Sox signing of Stephen Drew seemingly forced Oakland's hand, as they agreed to a two-year deal with Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima on the same day. A .310 career hitter in Japan, he'll get every chance to be the everyday shortstop.

The team could still look to move center fielder Coco Crisp after acquiring Chris Young from the Diamondbacks early on in the offseason. Other than that, they appear ready to go with essentially the same team as last season, and why not?

Offseason Overview

While the Atlanta Braves already made a splash this offseason in adding B.J. Upton to replace Michael Bourn in center field, they still need to address the third base/left field situation before the season starts.

With Chipper Jones retired, the most likely scenario would be the team signing a left fielder and sliding Martin Prado in to play third. The team also cut ties with starter Tommy Hanson, shipping him to the Angels for reliever Jordan Walden in Hanson's first year of arbitration eligibility.

Health will be the biggest concern for the Cardinals, as they don't quite have the depth they did last season, but on paper they have as strong a team top to bottom as any in the National League.
