Players to Watch
Jake Cohen, F, Davidson
The senior forward is going to be key for the Wildcats and any upset chance the team may have. He’s a sturdy 6’10”, 235 pounds and is already averaging 10.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.7 assists.
Cohen has range out to the three-point line and isn’t afraid to bang inside—his versatility having become a key to the success of this Davidson program over the past few years.
If he can put together a solid performance against Vanderbilt in the first round, there is a good shot the ‘Cats are moving on.
Kevin Pangos, G, Gonzaga
Gonzaga is ranked No. 19 in the nation right now, and this undersized gunner is a large reason the mid-major program is getting so much respect.
Pangos stands at just 6’1”, but he’s averaging 11.0 points and dishing 5.0 assists, while nailing 46.2 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Considering he attempts over four treys per game, it’s quite an impressive figure.
As long as the ‘Zags guard is dropping in long-range buckets and setting up his teammates, this team is going to go far.
Milton Jennings, F, Clemson
At 6’9”, 225 pounds, Jennings can do it all. Through two games, he’s averaging 10.5 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
This jack-of-all-trades finally has a chance to take the spotlight for the Tigers, after being a relative disappointment over his first few years with on Clemson’s roster.
If Jennings answers the call, the Tigers are going to make a deep run in this early-season event.
Prediction: Gonzaga over Davidson
The Bulldogs are ranked No. 19 in the nation for a reason, and they aren’t going to be stopped by any of the upset-minded teams in this tourney.
While they may be involved in some close calls, we don’t expect that Pangos and co. will have much trouble taking down either Davidson or West Virginia in the title game.
Barring a major injury or something equally as drastic occurring, you can pencil in Gonzaga to take the 2012 Old Spice Classic championship trophy home.
