Lakers Rumors: Latest on Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher and More from L.A.

Alex KayOct 29, 2012

The Los Angeles Lakers are getting set to start their much-anticipated 2012-13 campaign this Tuesday, but there are still plenty of rumors surrounding the team.

From injuries to stars like Kobe Bryant to speculation on trades and open roster spots, there is a buzz around this franchise about  what could be taking place in the near future.

Let’s take a closer look at these rumors.

Kobe Bryant’s Season-Opener Status

As of right now, the Black Mamba is questionable.

According to an ESPN Los Angeles report by Ramona Shelburne, Bryant hasn’t practiced due to a right foot sprain, and it’s up in the air right now as to whether or not he’ll be able to suit up and play against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

Earlier in the offseason, all the focus was on Dwight Howard and his status, but the focus has shifted to the 34-year-old shooting guard. He must get healthy in order for the Lakers to have early-season success and avoid an overwhelming media circus surrounding the team.

L.A. cannot afford to get off to a bad start, as it could have long-lasting implications that impact the team up to and through the postseason.

Derek Fisher

With Steve Blake and Chris Duhon reportedly on the block (via Marc Stein of ESPN), it is possible that the Lakers will add longtime veteran PG Derek Fisher back to the roster in the event that one of those players is moved.

However, there is still a chance that the team removes either Darius Johnson-Odom or Robert Sacre from its plans, as they are still on non-guaranteed contracts until Monday night.

If the Lakers elect to keep both, they will be at the league-mandated 15-man limit and would have no room to bring back Fish—who has yet to sign with a team.

It’s likely that Fisher will remain a FA until a contender emerges that he could get some playing time with. He was instrumental for the OKC Thunder down the stretch last season, and L.A. would love to have him as a backup to Steve Nash come springtime.
