NFL 2009 Mock Draft Through Round Six: Can Aaron Curry Go No. 1 Overall?
The NFL has been my only focus since Feb. 27, when free-agency started. I'm all about checking Profootballtalk.com every 10 minutes to check for updates. I guess you can say I'm obsessed.
Now that it's March, I must put out my newest mock draft. I can't believe I'm already up to six rounds! It's going to be tough, but I'll give it all I can.
I hope you enjoy!
1. Detroit Lions- Aaron Curry, Outside Linebacker, Wake Forest
For some reason the Lions feel they are content with their current Quarterback situation. Trust me, I think they should pick Matthew Stafford, but they won't. After an incredible combine, Aaron Curry is the number one pick.
2. St. Louis Rams- Jason Smith, Offensive Tackle, Baylor
Orlando Pace is near retirement, and there are rumors that he will be cut along with Torry Holt. The Rams need a dominate offensive tackle. Jason Smith became the No. 1 offensive tackle after the mistakes of Andre Smith.
3. Kansas City Chiefs- Michael Crabtree, Wide Receiver, Texas Tech
The Chiefs filled a need by trading for Matt Cassel. Congratulations, you now only have ten other needs on your team! Seriously, the Chiefs need help on offense. Dwyane Bowe can't do it all by himself. Michael Crabtree should be a stud with Kansas City.
4. Seattle Seahawks- Eugene Monroe, Offensive Tackle, Virginia
Seattle signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a five year deal. Doing that, they eliminated the need of getting a receiver so early. The focus is now on getting a shut-down on offensive tackle. Eugene Monroe can be the turn-around for this offense.
5. Cleveland Browns- Brian Orakpo, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Texas
I sometimes wonder if Cleveland's defense can get any worse...Well apparently they can. Denver signed one of their better defensive players, Andra Davis. They must improve on this side of the ball.
6. Cincinnati Bengals- B.J. Raji, Nose Tackle, Boston College
The Bengals defensive line is pretty awful. Their two offensive lineman targets are off the board, so I see them addressing another need. B.J. Raji is a run-stuffing monster, who I believe could be the next Albert Haynesworth.
7. Oakland Raiders- Everette Brown, Defensive End, Boston College
I hear all of the people saying that Oakland needs a receiver...Yes, they do! I don't see them taking Jeremy Maclin because he's a return-specialist, and Oakland already has one in Johnny Lee Higgins. Everette Brown can be a force on a weak defensive line.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars- Vontae Davis, Cornerback, Illinois
Vontae Davis performed very well at the combine. Unfortunately, Malcolm Jenkins was disappointing. The Jags need a solid Cornerback. Drayton Florence was an epic failure. Jacksonville has many options at the No. 8 pick.
9. Green Bay Packers- Tyson Jackson, Defensive End, LSU
I've said for months now that the Green Bay Packers need to improve the defensive line. Aaron Kampman is getting older and he won't be around forever. Time to get much younger. Tyson Jackson seems like the smart pick here.
10. San Francisco 49'ers- Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, Georgia
This pick took me a long time to decide on. The 49'ers recently signed former Chiefs Quarterback Damon Huard. Are they seriously considering him to be the starter? Alex Smith is a bona fide bust. Time to draft somebody with actual potential.
11. Buffalo Bills- Brian Cushing, Outside Linebacker, USC
Brian Cushing was an absolute monster at the combine. I had Aaron Maybin going here for awhile, but then I changed my mind. Buffalo could use an improvement at outside linebacker. Brian Cushing is a 6"3 stud with all the tools to succeed in the NFL.
12. Denver Broncos- Aaron Maybin, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Penn State
The Broncos filled a need at middle linebacker, the need for a safety, and the need for a cornerback. What's left on the defensive side of the ball? A defensive Tackle? Too bad, B.J. Raji is gone. I see Denver focusing on getting a stud at defensive end. I, personally, think Maybin is a steal this late.
13. Washington Redskins- Andre Smith, Offensive Tackle, Alabama
The Redskins really need help on the offensive line. Andre Smith's stock has dropped from a top-3-pick to a middle-of-the-first round pick. That said, he's still a tremendous player, if he can concentrate on the game of football.
14. New Orleans Saints- Rey Maualuga, Middle Linebacker, USC
Jabari Greer recently signed with the Saints, which filled a big need at Cornerback. Now, they must focus on getting a solid linebacker next to Jonathan Vilma. The Saints could potentially have a good defense next year. Does that sound shocking to you?
15. Houston Texans- Jeremy Maclin, Wide Receiver, Missouri
Although the Texans have Andre Johnson at Wide Receiver, what else do they have? Kevin Walter is good in the slot, but who is the No. 2? Jeremy Maclin will be if the draft him. He will also supply strong kick and punt returning ability.
16. San Diego Chargers- Michael Oher, Offensive Tackle, Ole Miss
San Diego's current starting offensive tackle Jeromey Clary, gave up 6.5 sacks last season. The Chargers as usual, don't have many needs to fill. Michael Oher's poor performance at the combine will cause him to slip out of the top 15.
17. New York Jets- Mark Sanchez, Quarterback, USC
New York should be ecstatic that Mark Sanchez is still available for them, but will they take him? I've heard people talking about Brett Ratliff possibly being the starting Quarterback.
I won't lie, I had never heard of him. The Jets need to draft Mark Sanchez if he is there.
18. Chicago Bears- Darrius Heyward-Bey, Wide Receiver, Maryland
The Bears have done nothing thus far to address their wide receiver situation. They must take Darrius Heyward-Bey in the first round if he's still there. He, by far, had the best combine for a Wide Receiver.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Peria Jerry, Defensive Tackle, Ole Miss
After losing Jovan Haye, the Buccaneers need a defensive tackle. They are a defensive-minded team which leads me to believe that they will take a defensive player. Peria Jerry will fit in nicely.
20. Detroit Lions from: Dallas Cowboys- Malcolm Jenkins, Cornerback, Ohio State
The fact that Malcolm Jenkins is available this late is ridiculous. He has incredible talent, but had an awful combine. Detroit needs to improve everywhere. Two defensive players in the first round sounds good though.
21. Philadelphia Eagles- Knowshon Moreno, Running Back, Georgia
Finally, the first running back is taken. Philadelphia has a talented running back in Brian Westbrook, but he can never seem to stay healthy. Correll Buckhalter is now a Bronco, so the Eagles need to address this need.
22. Minnesota Vikings- Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver, Florida
I've had Percy Harvin going to the Vikings for months now. The Vikings missed out on T.J. Houshmandzadeh, which left the need for a receiver still there. Percy Harvin is a quick receiver with good hands, and he can also return kicks.
23. New England Patriots- James Laurinaitis, Middle Linebacker, Ohio State
New England traded Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs. The front-seven for the Patriots is still fairly old. Jerod Mayo is a stud and will be for years to come but the Patriots need another linebacker. James Laurinaitis is a smart and physical player who will succeed in Foxboro.
24. Atlanta Falcons- Brandon Pettigrew, Tight End, Boston College
The Falcons were a terrific, yet surprising team last year. With that said, they still could improve in a few places. Can you name their starting Tight End off the top of your head? I can't. Brandon Pettigrew will be a big target for Matty "Ice" Ryan.
25. Miami Dolphins- Clay Matthews, Outside Linebacker, USC
Bill Parcells has spent four first rounds picks on linebackers in his career. Joey Porter is going older and he will begin to wear down physically. Clay Matthews is now a first round pick after his great combine.
26. Baltimore Ravens- Hakeem Nicks, Wide Receiver, North Carolina
Derrick Mason had a good season last year, but he is near the end of his career. The Ravens need to find a dominate target in this year's draft. Hakeem Nicks is a 6"1 stud who has great hands.
27. Indianapolis Colts- Chris Wells, Running Back, Ohio State
Hear me out with this one. The Colts already have Joseph Addai, but he has proven that he isn't an every-down runner. Chris Wells is a big and physical running back, who will be a nice complement to Joseph Addai.
28. Philadelphia Eagles from Carolina- Louis Delmas, Safety, Western Michigan
The Eagles failed to re-sign one of their best franchise players off all time, Brian Dawkins. This leads me to believe that they will select a safety with one of their two first=round picks.
29. New York Giants- Kenny Britt, Wide Receiver, Rutgers
There is no telling whether or not Plaxico Burress will be back next season. My heart tells me that he won't be there. The Giants need to improve at Wide Receiver. Steve Smith and Sinorice Moss haven't shown me much in their years.
30. Tennessee Titans- D.J. Moore, Cornerback, Connecticut
The Titans picked up Nate Washington at wide receiver. This basically means that they are set at receiver. The Titans don't have many needs, but they could upgrade the No. 2 cornerback spot. D.J. Moore is the best Cornerback available here.
31. Arizona Cardinals- Michael Johnson, Defensive End/Linebacker, Georgia Tech
Many people will be surprised with this pick. Let me explain. The Cardinals lack many impact players in the front seven. The defense is worse off than the offense is currently.
Michael Johnson is a beast, who would be a steal this late.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers- Alex Mack, Center, California
Justin Hartwig is the Steelers current starter at Center. He surrendered a league-leading 6.5 sacks at his position. Pittsburgh's offensive line is awful, they must address it right away.
Round Two
33. Detroit Lions- Josh Freeman, Quarterback, Kansas State
The Detroit Lions draft thus far, has been completely ideal. They've gotten two defensive studs and now possibly the franchise quarterback. Josh Freeman will be a steal here.
34. New England Patriots from Kansas City Sean Smith, Cornerback/Safety, Utah
The Patriots could use an upgrade at safety. Rodney Harrison has about one year left in him at best. Sean Smith could also play time at Cornerback if need.
35. St. Louis Rams- Brian Robiskie, Wide Receiver, Ohio State
To me, Brian Robiskie will have an impact on his team, like Eddie Royal did for the Broncos. He has all of the qualities to be a star receiver in this league.
36. Cleveland Browns- LeSean McCoy, Running Back, Pittsburgh
Jamal Lewis is one of the slowest running backs in the league. He's taken a lot of abuse in his career, and he could be one of those players that retires early.
37. Seattle Seahawks- Duke Robinson, Guard/Tackle, Oklahoma
Mike Wahle is old and very injury-prone. Seattle needs help at Guard. They already drafted Eugene Monroe, now they have Duke Robinson. Sounds like the making of a scary offensive line.
38. Cincinnati Bengals- Eben Britton, Offensive Tackle, Arizona
Getting Eben Britton in the second round is incredible. The Bengals should be thanking their lucky stars for getting somebody with so much talent this late.
39. Jacksonville Jaguars- Jamon Meredith, Offensive Tackle, South Carolina
The Jaguars had all of their offensive line starters miss at least some time due to injury. They must get some depth up front.
40. Oakland Raiders- Phil Loadholt, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma
There are really no quality receivers on the board right now worth being taken this early. Oakland must address their offensive tackle spots.
41. Green Bay Packers- Alphonso Smith, Cornerback, Wake Forest
Al Harris and Charles Woodson are both nearing the end of their careers. The Packers must get some depth in the secondary.
42. Buffalo Bills- Paul Kruger, Defensive End, Utah
Once again, another steal. Paul Kruger really came on strong during the last part of the 2008 college football season.
43. San Francisco 49'ers- Robert Ayers, Defensive End, Tennessee
The 49'ers are pretty awful at rushing the pass. They need to get a defensive end with good size and speed.
44. Miami Dolphins from Washington- Darius Butler, Cornerback, Connecticut
The Dolphins lost Andre Goodman, who started all 16 games, to the Broncos. Miami must find his replacement in the draft.
45. New York Giants from New Orleans- Shonn Greene, Running Back, Iowa
Derrick Ward signed with the Buccaneers this offseason. The Giants would love to get somebody very talented to fill in for him. Shonn Greene is the Doak Walker Award winner.
46. Houston Texans- Larry English, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Northern Illinois
If English is drafted to the Texans, he will likely start at outside linebacker. Houston was so desperate for linebackers last year that they signed Roosevelt Colvin.
47. New England Patriots from San Diego- Xavier Fulton, Offensive Tackle, Illinois
The Patriots have addressed two major defensive needs, and now they will go for offense. New England could use serious depth on the offensive line.
48. Denver Broncos- Victor "Macho" Harris, Cornerback, Virginia Tech
Denver released Dre' Bly this offseason. The Broncos have signed several defensive players, and I see the trend of defense continuing in the draft.
49. Chicago Bears- Connor Barwin, Defensive End, Cincinnati
Adewale Ogunlye had an off-year in 2008. Chicago could use some young talent on the defensive line.
50. Cleveland Browns from Tampa Bay- William Moore, Safety, Missouri
The Browns lost Sean Jones due to free-agency. William Moore, surprisingly, is still on the board.
51. Dallas Cowboys- Patrick Chung, Safety, Oregon
Roy Williams, the safety, was released on Mar. 5. The Cowboys need to find an immediate fill in.
52. New York Jets- Juaquin Iglesias, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma
The Jets released Laveranues Coles a couple weeks back. He immediately found a home in Cincinnati.
53. Philadelphia Eagles- Fenuki Tupou, Offensive Tackle, Oregon
The Eagles despite signing Stacy Andrews, still need offensive line help. Fenuki Tupou will be a talented depth player.
54. Minnesota Vikings- Coye Francies, Cornerback, Oregon State
Cedric Griffin is very inconsistent, but performed much better last year. Antoine Winfield will be the veteran leader.
55. Atlanta Falcons- Fili Moala, Defensive Tackle, USC
The Falcons lost Grady Jackson to the Lions this offseason. The Falcons could have a scary line with John Abraham, Jamaal Anderson, and Fili Moala.
56. Miami Dolphins- Louis Murphy, Wide Receiver, Florida
There's no denying it...The Dolphins receivers are very average. Ted Ginn Jr. has shown potential, but shy of that, they have nothing.
57. Baltimore Ravens- Clint Sintim, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Virginia
The Ravens lost Bart Scott through free-agency. They could use depth in the front seven.
58. New England Patriots- Donald Brown, Running Back, Connecticut
Laurence Maroney is often injured and hasn't quite lived up to potential. The Patriots need a solid compliment to him.
59. Carolina Panthers- Evander Hood, Defensive Tackle, Missouri
The loss of Kris Jenkins last year left a big gap in the defensive line. The Panthers must find a replacement for him.
60. New York Giants- Jairus Byrd, Cornerback/Safety, Oregon
The Giants have almost no needs, but they could draft a project for the years to come. Jairus Byrd can play at both cornerback and safety.
61. Indianapolis Colts- Ramses Barden, Wide Receiver, Cal-Poly
The loss of Marvin Harrison can be forgotten if the Colts draft a legitimate receiver. Ramses Barden is flying up the charts right now.
62. Tennessee Titans- Marcus Freeman, Outside Linebacker, Ohio State
The Titans linebackers are pretty weak besides Keith Bullocks. They need to find a talented outside linebacker.
63. Arizona Cardinals- Max Unger, Center, Oregon
The Cardinals need interior blocking. If they expect Tim Hightower to be the future running back for the franchise, they need to fix the O-line.
64. Pittsburgh Steelers- Jarron Gilbert, Defensive End, San Jose State
The Steelers need some young blood on the defensive line. Aaron Smith turns 33 in April.
Round Three
65. Detroit Lions- Jason Watkins, Offensive Tackle, Florida
66. St. Louis Rams- Pat White, Quarterback/Running Back/Wide Receiver, West Virginia
67. Kansas City Chiefs- Ron Brace, Defensive Tackle, Boston College
68. Seattle Seahawks- Rashad Johnson, Safety, Alabama
69. Dallas Cowboys from Cleveland- Jarrett Dillard, Wide Receiver, Rice
70. Cincinnati Bengals- Jonathan Luigs, Center, Arkansas
71. Oakland Raiders- Derrick Williams, Wide Receiver, Penn State
72. Jacksonville Jaguars- Sen'Derrick Marks, Defensive Tackle, Auburn
73. Green Bay Packers- Terrance Taylor, Defensive Tackle, Michigan
74. San Francisco 49'ers- Augustus Parrish, Offensive Tackle, Kent State
75. Buffalo Bills- Jared Cook, Tight End, South Carolina
76. New York Jets from New Orleans- Rashad Jennings, Running Back, Liberty
77. Houston Texans- Derek Pegues, Safety, Mississippi State
78. San Diego Chargers- Herman Johnson, Guard, LSU
79. Denver Broncos- Tyrone McKenzie, Outside Linebacker, South Florida
80. Washington Redskins- Zack Follett, Outside Linebacker, California
81. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Rhett Bomar, Quarterback, Sam Houston State

83. Green Bay Packers from New York Jets- Troy Kropog, Offensive Tackle, Tulane
84. Chicago Bears- Andy Levitre, Guard, Oregon State
85. Philadelphia Eagles- Shawn Nelson, Tight End, Southern Mississippi
86. Minnesota Vikings- Lydon Murtha, Offensive Tackle, Nebraska
87. Miami Dolphins- Sammie Lee Hill, Nose Tackle, Stillman
88. Baltimore Ravens- Gerald McRath, Middle Linebacker, Southern Miss
89. New England Patriots- Austin Collie, Wide Receiver, BYU
90. Atlanta Falcons- Nic Harris, Safety, Oklahoma
91. New York Giants- Chase Coffman, Tight End, Missouri
92. Indianapolis Colts- Dannell Ellerbe, Outside Linebacker, Georgia
93. Carolina Panthers- Mike Mickens, Cornerback, Cincinnati
94. Tennessee Titans- Alex Magee, Defensive Tackle, Purdue
95. Arizona Cardinals- Javon Ringer, Running Back, Michigan State
96. Pittsburgh Steelers- Trevor Canfield, Guard, Cincinnati
