Week 4 Waiver Wire: Sunday Stars You Should Target This Week

Timothy RappSep 24, 2012

As usual, Week 3 was full of surprise fantasy stars, upsets no one saw coming and a slew of crazy and unpredictable games that went into overtime.

In the NFL, it's best to expect the unexpected. Which I guess then makes it the expected, but let's not dabble over semantics.

Instead, let's take a closer look at five of Sunday's biggest—and most surprising—fantasy stars, and list a few reasons for why you should be targeting them on your waiver wire this week. They may not win you your league, but they could help you win a week or two.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Buffalo Bills

The fact that Fitzpatrick is available in 58.5 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues surprises me. While he's by no means a QB1, he's a nice backup to have around in deeper leagues.

Thus far this year, he's scored 13, 18 and 21 fantasy points for owners. Not too shabby. And with running backs in Buffalo falling prey to injuries at alarming rates, the Bills could be in line to air it out moving forward.

Heath Miller, TE, Pittsburgh Steelers

Miller had two touchdowns against the Oakland Raiders... in the first half!

Owned in just 27.1 percent of ESPN leagues, Miller has established himself as a key cog in the Pittsburgh offense, and certainly one of the team's most trusted red zone options.

He's had a touchdown in each of the Steelers' games, and has seen regular targets as well. Until the scores stop coming, you should definitely consider adding Miller if for no other reason than to stash him as a TE2.

Mikel Leshoure, RB, Detroit Lions

Owned in just 32.7 percent of ESPN leagues, the new starter for the Lions is a must-own after his big Week 3 performance. With 26 rushes for 100 yards and a touchdown, I think it's safe to say Leshoure is the running back in Detroit you want, not Kevin Smith.

Kyle Rudolph, TE, Minnesota Vikings

Looking for a TE2 to throw in for the byes or to play matchups with?

You should definitely add Rudolph, who is owned in just 13 percent of ESPN leagues. After three weeks, he has 30 fantasy points, including his two-touchdown afternoon against the San Francisco 49ers.

The scores won't always come, but he's probably good for 4-7 receptions and somewhere in the vicinity of 50 yards per game, so he's a safe if unspectacular play even if he doesn't score.

Tashard Choice, RB, Buffalo Bills

Okay, okay, so Choice wasn't exactly a Week 3 star. But I've included him because he showed me that he has the potential to be a star for a week or two if called upon to start for the Bills at running back.

When the early front-runner for fantasy MVP, C.J. Spiller, went down on Sunday, Choice filled in and finished the contest with 99 yards from scrimmage. Give him a full game, and who knows?

This much is for certain: Fred Jackson and Spiller owners should scramble to add Choice and plug him in for a week or two if the aforementioned backs aren't healthy soon.
