NFL: Projecting Final Season Records for Every 2-0 Team

Jesse ReedJun 1, 2018

There are six undefeated NFL teams after two weeks, but teams like the San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals won't come close to maintaining a perfect record by the end of the 2012 season.

Taking into account future schedules, consistency and depth, I'll project the final record for each of the six current undefeated teams.

Feel free to agree or disagree with my projections in the comments section below.

San Diego Chargers

1 of 6

Projected Record: 9-7

If Philip Rivers had any kind of offensive line in front of him, I'd say the Chargers had a legitimate chance to win 11-12 games. But he doesn't. Worse still, the depth on the line is even worse than it's overall level of talent.

Rivers and the Chargers have a tough schedule in front of them, including road games at New Orleans, Denver, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and New York (Jets). Additionally, this team will host the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens during the season.

All these teams, minus the Saints, have a strong pass-rush and opportunistic secondary. Rivers and the Chargers will find themselves in some lopsided battles as a result and I expect this team to lose at least seven games.

Arizona Cardinals

2 of 6

Projected Record: 7-9

Forgive me if I don't trust Kevin Kolb or John Skelton to win many games for the Arizona Cardinals this year. Combined with an inability to run the ball (148 yards on 53 carries for an average of just 2.8 yards per carry), this team is headed for trouble.

It's a damn shame, too, because the team features one of the stoutest defenses in all of football.

After a relatively easy schedule in the first half of the season (minus the game at New England), the Cards face the San Francisco 49ers (twice), the Green Bay Packers, the Atlanta Falcons (on the road), the New York Jets (on the road), the Seattle Seahawks (on the road), the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.

It's going to be tough for this team to win eight games this year.

Houston Texans

3 of 6

Projected Record: 11-5

The Houston Texans have some tough opponents on the schedule this season and their first real test will be in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. I expect the Broncos to win this game at home and it won't be the last time the Texans lose to a winning football team in 2012.

The Texans have away games against the Broncos, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and New England Patriots. They also host the Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens.

One of the biggest areas of concern regarding this team is that it seems to be only a matter of time before Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson or Arian Foster goes down with another injury. If the trio can stay healthy, this team has a chance to do big things in the playoffs.

It will not be easy, but the Texans will win 11 games in 2012.

Philadelphia Eagles

4 of 6

Projected Record: 9-7

Michael Vick scares me. You never know what he's going to do, except you know he'll either win the game or lose it, depending on which side of the bed he got out of that morning.

Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles face some tough teams along the way to the end of the 2012 campaign. I expect them to lose at Arizona in Week 3 and the tests only get sterner as the season progresses.

The Eagles host the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Cincinnati Bengals—all teams capable of beating them. They also travel on the road to face the Cowboys, Giants, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Thankfully, the team's defense looks sound. It's still a brutal schedule, and the Eagles will be fortunate to come out of it with nine wins.

Atlanta Falcons

5 of 6

Projected Record: 12-4

The Atlanta Falcons are stacked from top to bottom at every just about every position. Matt Ryan and his receivers are deadly and Michael Turner is a reliable threat on the ground.

Additionally, the addition of Mike Nolan as the defensive coordinator has vastly improved the team's ability to confound opponents on defense, as we saw on Monday Night Football against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

The Falcons have a relatively easy schedule, too, playing in the NFC South. The New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are all struggling in various ways, and the Falcons have a good chance to sweep their own division.

The Falcons do play the NFC East, though and all four teams are talented enough to defeat them. Throw in a hiccup or two and I see them with a 12-4 record at the end of the season.

San Francisco 49ers

6 of 6

Projected Record: 13-3

Before the 2012 season began, I thought the San Francisco 49ers would feature a better team than the one that won 13 games a year ago, but I thought their record would be closer to 11-5 than 13-3. And if you had told me they would be 1-1 after their first two games against the Green Bay Packers (at Lambeau) and Detroit Lions, I would have accepted that as a good start.

Now it's hard to see this team losing more than three games, and I'm being conservative.

The 49ers only have one area of weakness on their team. The offensive line still struggles at times against a heavy pass-rush, but the team's ability to run the ball down opposing teams' throats negates that weakness to a certain extent.

Going forward, the only teams I consider to be true threats to beat the 49ers are the New York Giants (at home), Seattle Seahawks (road) and New England Patriots (road).

The 49ers have the talent, motivation, discipline and mentality to win at least 13 games.
