John Cena Will Miss 2-3 Weeks Following Elbow Surgery

Jun 1, 2018

As unimaginable as it seems, the WWE will be without their biggest star, John Cena, for the next four to six weeks as he recovers from surgery on his elbow that he underwent Tuesday, according to WWE.com.

The operation was performed by world-renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, and the purpose of the procedure was to remove bone chips from the superstar's elbow.

WWE’s official website is reporting about the surgery Cena underwent Tuesday and the timetable for his return:

WWE.com has learned John Cena had surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow today. Dr. Andrews removed several pieces of bone cartilage from Cena's elbow through a scope. A surgery like this will take four to six weeks to recover.

"

UPDATE: Tuesday, September 18, 2:50 p.m. ET by Donald Wood

Despite the initial report that Cena would miss 4-6 weeks of time after undergoing elbow surgery, the WWE is now saying that the top superstar will only miss 2-3 weeks of action.

WWE is now reporting on the change in estimated recovery time:

"

Cena is expected to recover in two to three weeks. An update on his recovery time is expected Thursday when he is reevaluated.

"

While there were legitimate concerns about Cena’s health, this is the kind of injury that could see Cena back before the next pay-per-view. If that’s the case, the WWE wouldn’t even have to change their current storyline plans; just work the surgery into the angle.

---End of Update---

By no means is having bone chips in your elbow easy to deal with, but it is an injury that a performer can work through until surgery can be scheduled.

That is likely what WWE did here.

Vince McMahon and the WWE brass realize now the power CM Punk yields and have used this momentum to give Cena some time to get healthy and recharge his batteries.

While the recovery time is longer than expected in the eyes of the WWE Universe, this is the kind of break that a superstar like Cena needs after carrying the company for at least the last five years.

There are no major pay-per-views on the horizon, so if the WWE did plan this surgery for today in advance, they did this the right way. Punk is red hot and can carry the product for at least the time being, and Cena now has the time off he so desperately needs.
