Power Ranking Every NFL Division Through Week 2

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

We all read at least one divisional power ranking list prior to the season. Now it's time to see how things have changed two weeks in.

And believe me, they've changed.

Drastically.

Two games certainly don't make or break any team's chances at the playoffs, and these rankings are far from static, but let's see where everyone stacks up right now.

8. AFC West

1 of 8

Yes, the San Diego Chargers are 2-0, and Peyton Manning's Broncos have a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on their 2012 resume and nearly came back against a sound Falcons team in Atlanta, but the bottom of this division is dragging the collective down.

The Kansas City Chiefs have severely underwhelmed through two weeks, getting spanked by the Atlanta Falcons and the Buffalo Bills.

Their offense has been relatively stagnant, they can't rush the passer (one sack in two games), and the run defense has allowed 142.5 yards per contest.

The Raiders—well, they've been equally as bad.

They were sloppy against the Chargers in Week 1 and were totally thrashed by the rebuilding Miami Dolphins team in Week 2.

Heading in to Week 3, this conference doesn't look as deep as everyone initially expected.

7. AFC South

2 of 8

The Houston Texans look to be the class of the division, which we all expected.

The Jaguars are clearly improved, but contenders? I won't go that far yet. The defense is good, though. Andrew Luck will keep the Colts competitive, and their defense isn't that porous.

Through two games, the Tennessee Titans appear to be one of the most abysmal teams in football.

That's what happens when you play the Patriots and Chargers and your starting running back—who rushed for over 2,000 yards two years ago—has 21 yards on 19 carries.

6. NFC East

3 of 8

The Eagles lead the division at 2-0, but they've been fortunate to win both games. Four turnovers per contest won't cut it in the NFL

And Michael Vick can't keep taking major shots.

The Giants were amazingly resilient against the Bucs, but I'd like to see more consistency from the reigning Super Bowl champs. Some injuries suffered in Week 2 could negatively affect the team for a while.

RG3's Redskins will certainly be a tougher test than everyone expected, but similar to New York, I think consistency will be the biggest issue.

After an encouraging road win against the G-Men in Week 1, the Cowboys were owned by the Seahawks in Week 2.

Consistency issues loom, but the talent is undeniably apparent in this division.

5. AFC East

The Patriots weren't supposed to lose to the Arizona Cardinals in the home opener. But they did.

Tom Brady wasn't horrible, but his offensive line had trouble protecting him, and a rash of unusual plays at the end of the game led to the stunning defeat.

An injury to Aaron Hernandez could really sting as well.

The Jets could have sent another message to the rest of the NFL, but were exposed against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They'll improve when Darrelle Revis returns.

After looking horrid in a 48-28 loss in Week 1, Buffalo's schizophrenic Bills ran C.J. Spiller and played well on defense en route to a solid 35-17 win over an uninspired Chiefs club.

Good win for the Dolphins over the Raiders. Miami doesn't have a ton of receiving talent, but if Reggie Bush keeps playing like he has to start the season, it won't need much to be competitive.

4. NFC North

5 of 8

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers haven't gotten off to a 2011-esque start.

So what?

They were dominant on defense against the Chicago Bears. They'll be fine.

Chicago will need to protect Jay Cutler much better. And Cutler can't take as many chances throwing the ball into tight coverage. (The story of his career, right?) If Matt Forte's hurt for a while, it'll dampen the high hopes in the Windy City.

Detroit squeaked past the Rams in Week 1 and held strong before succumbing to the mighty San Francisco 49ers in Week 2. Still, they've left much to be desired heading into Week 3.

The Vikings haven't been as bad as we expected, but they are probably still a year away from contending.

3. NFC South

6 of 8

The Saints are 0-2?

What the?

Sure, Drew Brees has 664 yards passing, but four interceptions to go with four touchdowns certainly hasn't helped.

Actually, the defense has been the biggest problem. Playing Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton in the first two weeks doesn't help, either.

The Falcons could be the most aerially explosive team in the league, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have impressed early.

This division has potential, but it all starts with New Orleans rebounding.

2. AFC North

7 of 8

The teams in this division will probably end up beating each other into a bloody pulp, but there are three clubs who could contend for the division crown.

And the Cleveland Browns aren't an easy win anymore.

Sure, they're far from dynamic in any one area, but a healthy Trent Richardson will give nightmares to opposing front sevens.

The defense is pretty solid, but without Joe Haden they'll struggle stopping the pass.

Don't worry about the Ravens or Steelers.

1. NFC West

8 of 8

Yeah, the NFC West—formerly known as the NFC Worst—is the best division in football through two weeks.

The Arizona Cardinals are 2-0, and an injury has caused them to shuffle from John Skelton to Kevin Kolb. Yes, Kolb beat Tom Brady in Brady's house. The defense is ultra physical and loaded with premier athletes like Darnell Dockett, Daryl Washington and Patrick Peterson.

The Seahawks are a similar team with a good defense and a sound running game. However, right now, I'd take Russell Wilson over either one of Arizona's signal-callers.

After a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of those Cardinals in Week 1, Seattle dominated the Cowboys from start to finish in a Week 2 rout. The Rams were beaten in the last minute on the road against the Lions in Week 1, and Sam Bradford outdueled RG3 in on Sunday. Cortland Finnegan and Janoris Jenkins lead an underrated secondary.

Oh yeah, then there's the 49ers, who stunned the Packers in Green Bay, then held the high-powered Lions in check in Week 2. Alex Smith is becoming a surgeon under center, especially with pre-snap reads and audibles. The ground game is punishing, and so is the defense.
