Silly Prop Bets for Handshake Gate Redux and the Rest of NFL Week 2
Jim Schwartz vs. Jim Harbaugh.
This Sunday.
The Tyson vs. Holyfield of NFL coaches.
Where's Michael Buffer when you need him?
OK, we know nothing's going to happen between the two rather fiery head coaches, but it's likely that their handshake last year is what the TV networks will be talking about, using up precious time in which they could be analyzing a matchup between serious playoff contenders.
Just for fun, here are some prop bets you and your football-watching compadres can monitor in Week 2.
(Yes, totally made up.)
Lions at 49ers: How Many Times Will NBC Replay "Handshake Gate?"
1 of 6Over/Under - 4
We all know how TV networks are absolutely enamored with hyping anything and everything besides the actual game, so you know they'll be all over "HandShake Gate" of a year ago.
Expect replays of the infamous handshake incident to run like every 15 seconds during the pregame shows, but this "prop bet" starts when the game is kicked off.
You know they'll show the facial expressions of both coaches when the showdown begins and will probably play up "Handshake Gate" during the first half, especially in the first quarter.
Four times seems reasonable, right?
Lions at 49ers: Will NBC, at Any Point, Break Down "Handshake Gate?"
2 of 6Yes/No
No, NBC isn't exactly ESPN, the network that "broke down" a scuffle during New York Jets training camp this year.
However, don't be stunned if NBC, maybe even as a joke, allows one of their analysts to "break down" what happened last year after the 49ers beat the Lions in Detroit.
During the pregame show, during halftime, or potentially postgame—anytime.
Sadly, I'm leaning toward "Yes."
Saints at Panthers: How Many Times Will "Bounty/BountyGate" Be Uttered?
3 of 6Over/Under - 6
By now, you'd think announcers and analysts would cool the "bounty" talk when it comes to the Saints.
Then again, the bounty program is the reason Sean Payton isn't on New Orleans' sidelines this year. Jonathan Vilma recently won his appeal, too, so that could lead to more mentioning.
Against the Panthers, with both teams looking to avoid an 0-2 start, we'll hear "bounty" quite often. It's arguably the most despicable and humiliating scandal in NFL history. That's understandable. But it's time to focus on the games, right?
Bet begins when the game kicks off.
Redskins at Rams: Will "Griffining" Be Mentioned?
4 of 6Yes/No
No, it hasn't caught on the way "Tebowing" did last season, but give it time.
It's called "Griffining," named after RG3 celebrating on the seat of his pants following his first career touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon against the Saints last week.
"Griffining is the new Tebowing (h/t @sarahkogod) twitter.com/BleacherReport…
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) September 10, 2012"
In D.C. it's already becoming popular, but is it trendy enough for FOX announcers to mention it?
We know how these TV networks like to (pretend to) stay up with the times, so yes, they'll discuss it, especially if Griffin III's playing well.
Bet begins when the game starts.
Cardinals at Patriots: Will New England Cover the 14-Point Spread?
5 of 6Yes/No
A 14-point spread is about as big as you'll see in the NFL. Then again, its the Patriots we're talking about here. And Kevin Kolb.
The possibilities are endless with Bill Belichick's squadron.
To be fair, Kolb performed admirably in a relief effort last week and led his team to the win.
New England is so strong at home and is fresh off a dominating effort against the Titans in Week 1.
They'll win by more than 14, right?
Cowboys at Seahawks: How Long Will It Take to Show Tony Romo's Botched FG Hold?
6 of 6Before Start of 2nd Quarter/After 2nd Quarter
Should FOX show Tony Romo's mishandled snap that led to a playoff defeat against the Seahawks in 2007?
Probably.
Pretty significant play, one that rarely happens.
But this bet isn't a matter of if they'll show a replay, but when.
Something tells me this will be one of the first things FOX mentions.
