Santino Marella or Mark Henry in Money in the Bank: Can Either Work?

JMar 3, 2009

It has been announced on WWE.com that Mark Henry will face off against Santino Marella on tonight's episode of ECW for the third spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXV, and I pose the question the Bleacher Report wrestling community if either deserve the opportunity?

The Money in the Bank match has provided some of the bigger spots at WrestleMania over the past four years, and this year should be no different. But to make the match of the high standard that we have come expect year after year, WWE needs to get the blend of wrestlers just right.

I made a plea about a week ago to involve The Big Show in the Money in the Bank match, which appears will not be happening now due to his World Heavyweight Championship match with Edge (...and let's face it, probably John Cena).

My prayers were not completely dashed though, as my plea was more for the inclusion of a larger wrestler, not necessarily The Big Show. Kane managed to triumph over Rey Mysterio and Mike Knox yesterday on Raw to earn his place in the match, and provide what I believe has been the missing ingredient in these matches since his last inclusion in 2005.

With my thirst to see a larger man in the mix quenched I anticipated the next few qualifiers to be of the high flying variety, but I certainly wasn’t expecting this match up on ECW.

Mark Henry is certainly not an inexperienced wrestler in the WWE, but I question his ability to perform in a situation like this. He certainly could bring the same characteristics to the table as someone like Kane or The Big Show would in a match like this, but not on the same level.

The role I envision of a larger wrestler in a match like the Money in the Bank is not to take the big falls but act more as a platform for them. Someone like Kane isn’t going to be leaping off 16-foot ladders through tables, but he could certainly be the one of the receiving end or somehow involved in the execution of it.

Mark Henry, however, does not possess the same agility of Kane or The Big Show in my opinion, and I fail to see how he could have a more positive influence on the match over someone like Evan Bourne or Shelton Benjamin, who potentially could be left out due to his inclusion.

Santino Marella, on the other hand, is even less likely of a candidate to perform in such a match. His role in WWE as of late has been focused far away from actually wrestling, and I think he would struggle heavily in a match like this.

In another respect, you want every participant in this match to seemingly have a chance at winning to build the suspense, but I think Santino has about as much chance of winning Money in the Bank as Rosa Mendes.

This match which WWE has made has confused me. With the likelihood in my opinion that Mark Henry will win, I can’t help but wonder how the dynamic of the match will be affected, for better—or more likely worse.

Who do you think will win tonight, and do you think it is the right decision by WWE?
