Redskins vs. Rams: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Spread Info, Game Time and More

Ryan RudnanskyJun 5, 2018

After an eye-opening win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins look to make it two in a row to start the season against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

While the Rams went 2-14 last season, they did show strides against the Detroit Lions in Week 1, ultimately falling 27-23. The secondary in particular was impressive, with new acquisition Cortland Finnegan and rookie Janoris Jenkins raising eyebrows.

Here's a look at the Week 2 matchup on Sunday.

What's At Stake?

For now, the Redskins are tied for first place in the NFC East. OK, they've only played one gamebut hey, it's a start.

Washington started seeing its defense come together last season, but the quarterback play was poor. Now, with promising rookie Robert Griffin III under center, there are high hopes for a turnaround in D.C.

As for the Rams, there are similar hopes in St. Louis after the defensecomplete with new cornerbacks Cortland Finnegan and rookie Janoris Jenkinsmade life difficult for Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions in Week 1.

Third-year quarterback Sam Bradford has a solid game against Detroit (17-of-25, 198 yards, one touchdown), but the pass protection remains a problem.

The Rams are trying to bounce back this season after a 2-14 campaign in 2011-2012.

What They're Saying

It's no wonder that Redskins news has been dominated by Robert Griffin III after he went 19-of-26 for 320 yards and two touchdowns in Washington's upset of the Saints in Week 1.

Head coach Mike Shanahan said the coaching staff studied several NFL and college offenses to come up with a game plan to utilize Griffin's multi-threat ability, according to The Washington Post. That included studying Griffin's offense at Baylor, the Carolina Panthers offense with Cam Newton and the Denver Broncos offense with Tim Tebow last season.

Shanahan said, via the Post:

"

You look at all the different type of options that work. When I first came into coaching, I was with Oklahoma for a couple years. We ran the wishbone and then you ran the veer and then you ran the counter-option and the speed option. So you’ve been through a lot of these things through your years of coaching.

"

As for the Rams, although they showed strides against the Lions last week, they apparently aren't going to be a team content with defeat, no matter the opponent.

Asked if he believed in moral victories, Danny Amendola said (via Fox Sports Midwest), "No, we lost. That's all that counts."

Obviously, that's what you hope a player says after a loss, but, still, it bears noting that the Rams under Jeff Fisher aren't going to be happy until they start racking up wins.

Guard Harvey Dahl and receiver Brandon Gibson echoed Amendola's sentiments.

Fisher added:

"

"I'm getting texts and emails from everybody across the country saying, ‘Great job.' ... Well, what do you mean great job? We lost by four points."

Redskins Player to Watch: Robert Griffin III, QB

I was going to say Alfred Morris here, but...

Who are we kidding? Of course Robert Griffin III is the player to watch for the Redskins. After what he did against New Orleans in Week 1, you can't help but lock your eyes on the rookie.

Beyond exhibiting brilliant arm strength and accuracy against the Saints, Griffin also ran 10 times for 42 yards. Unlike some other dual-threat quarterbacks, he's not primarily a runner. In fact, he may be better throwing the ball. He's that good.

On the other hand, the Rams have a much better pass defense than the Saints, so this will be a greater test for the Baylor product.

Rams Player to Watch: Cortland Finnegan, CB

Cortland Finnegan will be tasked with shadowing the Redskins' No. 1 receiver on Sunday, Pierre Garcon (if Garcon plays).

Garcon is currently probable for the tilt, but a foot injury could be limiting for the veteran. Garcon came over from Indianapolis in the offseason and caught four balls for 109 yards and a touchdown in Week 1.

While Garcon continues trying to show people he wasn't just a product of Peyton Manning's system in Indy, Finnegan will be looking to follow up an impressive performance against the Lions.

Finnegan gave the Rams the lead late in the second quarter against the Lions when he picked off Stafford for a touchdown.

Calvin Johnson may have had six catches for 111 yards in that game, but he had only two catches for 12 yards while in Finnegan's coverage, as ProFootballFocus.com points out. Most of his production came against the Rams' safeties.

If Finnegan can take away Garcon, it will make life much more difficult for Griffin on Sunday.

Key Matchup: Redskins Passing Attack vs. Rams Defense

Despite facing some impressive cornerbacks in St. Louis (including No. 3 corner Bradley Fletcher), Griffin does have an advantage with his arm strength, which he can use to test the safeties downfield.

He hooked up with Garcon on an 88-yard touchdown against the Saints.

Prediction: Redskins 27, Rams 17

I'm mighty impressed with Griffin (as are we all) at this point. While he was facing a poor secondary against the Saints, the ball came out of his hands beautifully, and he looked in control throughout.

You add the fact that he was sacked only once and hit a ho-hum three times against the Saints, and you have to feel good about his pass protection, too.

He should use that pass protection to buy himself enough time to test the Rams' safeties.

Here's a complete breakdown of the matchup on Sunday.
