Serena Williams Beats Sara Errani to Advance to US Open Women's Final

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Serena Williams defeated No. 10 seed Sara Errani in straight sets on Friday to advance to the U.S. Open women's final.

The three-time U.S. Open champion beat Errani, 6-1, 6-2. She has yet to lose a set in the 2012 U.S. Open after she ousted No. 12 seed Ana Ivanovic in the quarterfinals.

Williams notched nine aces against Errani, bringing her tournament-leading total to 50 through six matches. She also won 92 percent of first serve points (24 of 26) and racked up 38 winners, per USOpen.org.

The 30-year-old has been on fire since losing in the first-round of the French Open this year. She is 25-1 in singles since, including a Wimbledon title and a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Williams will face world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the final after Azarenka defeated Maria Sharapova in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Azarenka won the first Grand Slam singles title of her career this year at the Australian Open.

Williams is 9-1 against Azarenka in her career. She has won their last seven matchups, including at Wimbledon 2009, the 2010 Australian Open, the 2011 U.S. Open and at Wimbledon and the London Olympics this year. To say she's a favorite in the final would be an understatement.

On the other hand, you can't count Azarenka out. This is clearly the best year of the 23-year-old's career and she's only getting better. She is 54-7 this year with four singles titles (through the semifinals of the U.S. Open).

Williams and Azarenka will play in the women's final on Saturday.
