Fantasy Football Draft Strategy 2012: WRs You Can Trust to Rack Up Catches

Ian HanfordAug 30, 2012

If you haven't participated in your fantasy football draft this year, listen up. Even if you already have your team selected, take a look and pick another one.

Everyone has a pretty good idea of who to take in the first round. Superstar players are easy to identify, for the most part, and elite receivers are even easier. There aren't very many to choose from.

But what about those other guys? Maybe your league doesn't count each reception as a point toward your respective team's total, but it certainly changes the way you look at a receiver.

Let's take a look at three wideouts not named Wes Welker who will rack up the receptions in today's pass-happy NFL.

Eric Decker

Peyton Manning makes guys like Decker very happy. He did it with Brandon Stokley in Indianapolis, and he will do the same in Denver.

Last year, Decker had 44 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns. Expect his reception total to double this season.

In three preseason games, he has eight catches. That doesn't jump off the page, but just watch him play. He's 6'3'' and he knows how to carve out a spot in the defense's softest spot.

Decker isn't going to blow by anyone, or wow anyone with his athleticism, but he's going to catch the football. When you're playing with someone like Manning, that's the most important thing you can do.

Look for Decker to establish flawless rapport with Manning and use that to his advantage in the slot. He may not be an elite athlete, but he will find a ton of balls in his hands.

Wayne has nine catches so far this preseason, and I expect a big year for the 33-year-old veteran in 2012. Forget that Andrew Luck is a rookie, he has to throw to someone and it can't always be a tight end.

Wayne knows exactly how to get himself open. He isn't as fast as he once was, or as explosive, but if you get the ball near him he's going to catch it.

Last year, he had 75 catches for a putrid Colts team. There's no reason to think that those numbers will not increase with Luck under center.

Receivers like Wayne make a rookie's life much easier. He's reliable, and he's been around for a long time. Luck will be able to utilize his route-running and exceptional hands, even in losing efforts.

Wayne made a career playing with Manning's laser-like precision. I'm not saying Luck is Manning, but the potential is there.

Look for these two to become a familiar connection very early this season.

Danny Amendola

The Rams' offensive line is mediocre at best, and Sam Bradford thrives with short passes. Amendola won't ever stretch the field, but he's perfect for Bradford's strengths.

He only played in one game last season, but look for him and Bradford to both bounce back with a vengeance. In his last full season, he had 85 catches.

Amendola is your typical slot receiver. At 5'11'', he's a limited athlete. However, he has excellent hands and is willing to go over the middle.

With St. Louis' poor offensive line, Bradford will be looking to "safety valve" options frequently. Amendola is their best option in that department, and he will rack up catches just like he did in 2010.

His name won't be called early in your draft, but take a flyer if you need some receptions.
