NFL Free Agents: Best Landing Spots for Top Available Stars

Patrick ClarkeJun 3, 2018

Free-agent running back Ryan Grant is still looking for a team to play for this fall, despite the number of NFL franchise in need of a boost in the backfield in 2012. Grant last played for the Green Bay Packers in 2011, but he could potentially wind up playing for a division rival this coming season.

The Detroit Lions are in need of a veteran running back to take some pressure off their vaunted passing attack in 2012. Could Grant be that guy?

The 29-year-old only has 63 career regular season games of wear and tear on his body, and he's a threat out of the backfield in the passing game as well. I, for one, wouldn't be surprised if the Lions showed interest in him soon.

Here are some other top landing spots for notable free agents this summer.

Terrell Owens

The Seattle Seahawks released T.O. on Sunday after a disappointing preseason performance from the 38-year-old veteran wideout. A massive dropped touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos highlighted Owens' poor summer tryout.

Sure, Owens wasn't good enough for Pete Carroll's squad, but that doesn't mean he couldn't help some rundown NFL offenses this fall. A team like the Jacksonville Jaguars could use Owens' services this season.

Although they drafted wide receiver Justin Blackmon in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft this spring, the Jags are coming off a season in which they ranked dead last in the league in receiving yards (2,510) and second-to-last in yards per reception (10.5 YPR). What does Jacksonville have to lose?

Vince Young

Veteran quarterback Vince Young is also available for a team in need this season, after being released by the Buffalo Bills this past weekend.

Young has played in 60 career NFL games since being drafted in 2006, but he is coming off a poor season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. He completed 57.9 percent of his passes for 866 yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions in six games for the Birds.

Still, Young is a two-time Pro Bowler and a former No. 3 overall draft pick. And at 6'5", he can provide a solid, mobile option for a team in need of a dependable backup under center.

The St. Louis Rams look to be a great landing spot for Young at the moment. Starting quarterback Sam Bradford is injury-prone, and the Rams boasted one of the league's worst passing attacks a season ago. At least Young could bring experience and a big arm to the equation as a second-stringer who brings another dimension compared to Kellen Clemens.
