Watch MLB's Best Web Gems of the Season
Whenever I watch Baseball Tonight on ESPN, I always look forward to the Web Gems segment. These are plays we all dream of making, either as children playing Little League or as adults looking to recapture the glory days.
Either way, whenever I watch Mike Trout or any other outfielder rob a hitter of a home run, my eyes pop out (and every other MLB fan's do too).
That said, what if Bleacher Report were to present its own web gems of 2012? There have been a great number of top plays this season, from home run robberies to diving stops to incredible throws, but how would they fare in a top 10?
I'm up to my ears in footage, but we may have our winners. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the very first edition of Bleacher Report's MLB Web Gems!
No.10: Adrian Beltre's Long Throw
1 of 10Beltre may have had his fair share of injury issues in recent years, but we can't take away from the fact that the man still has three Gold Gloves at third base under his belt.
Sure, his durability isn't what one would call reliable, but it's throws like this that make him one of the best at his position.
No. 9: Ichiro's Still Got It!
2 of 10Even at age 38, Ichiro Suzuki is still patrolling the outfield as though he were 10 years younger.
While most players of his age are either on the golf course or strictly in DH mode, he continues to provide stellar defense.
Case in point, this extra-bases robbery against the Baltimore Orioles not too long ago.
No. 8: Carlos Gonzalez, Outfielder and Diver
3 of 10The man known as CarGo has slowly become a household name over the past few years. His hot bat, blazing speed and stellar work in the outfield have endeared him to fans.
Unfortunately, he plays for the Colorado Rockies, a squad with pitching so unpredictable that the team simply cannot afford to not play hard in the field.
Fortunately for the pitching staff, Gonzalez never hesitates to put his body on the line for hit robberies like this one.
No. 7: His Airness, Mike Trout
4 of 10Trout is not a very big guy by any means. He is only 6'1" and weighs 200 pounds.
However, after seeing him make this catch, I want to see him join the NBA and compete in the Slam Dunk Contest.
Call me crazy, but he just might win!
No. 6: Jimmy Rollins Flashes the Leather
5 of 10Rollins has lost his consistency at the plate since winning the NL MVP Award in 2007, but his work in the field has been virtually unchanged.
His footwork is phenomenal and he can still pull off ridiculous moves on occasion—all for the purpose of getting a hitter out.
No. 5: Cameron Maybin Robs Votto
6 of 10Joey Votto is one of the game's most dangerous hitters. He has power to all fields to go with a fine ability to hit for average.
However, in July, Votto lost an opposite field homer from his stat line thanks to San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin.
Maybin now has this wonderful memory that could serve as a bright moment in what has been a generally disappointing 2012 season for him.
No. 4: Mitch Moreland's Diving Grab
7 of 10When you think of Mitch Moreland, the term "elite defender" doesn't necessarily come to mind.
That said, if he keeps making plays like this, he could very well find himself inching into Gold Glove territory.
Ready for the impressive part? His web gem resulted in the speedy Adam Jones not reaching base.
No. 3: Trout's Double Dip
8 of 10Here we have another phenomenal Mike Trout play—except this one has an added bonus.
On top of making another NBA-like leap to make the catch, Trout manages to double a runner off first base.
I guess that the baseball gods chose to reward him for making such an awesome play!
No. 2: Derek Jeter, the Ageless Wonder
9 of 10Simply unbelievable, ladies and gentlemen.
Derek Jeter is 38 years young, and he's still able to make phenomenal throws like this one.
I don't care if the batter wasn't a fast runner, this play deserves its own Gold Glove.
No. 1: Spider-Trout, Spider-Trout!
10 of 10Every time I see footage of this Trout catch, this song runs through my head.
Never before have I seen an athlete move so nimbly and so gracefully.
He is just unbelievable.
That said, I can't help but wonder how he'd do in the country that invented the Spiderman catch...
