Jim Joyce: MLB Umpire Who Once Ruined Perfect Game Saves Woman's Life
Jim Joyce is a handy man to have around.
The MLB umpire pretty much saved a woman's life and is acting as humble as ever about this super feat.
MLB.com's Mike Bauman reports the umpire noticed a woman in distress prior to an Arizona Diamondbacks game, Monday at Chase Field in a Phoenix.

If the name Jim Joyce sounds familiar, that's only because he once blew a perfect game thrown by then-Tigers' ace Armando Galarraga with a horrible call.
The fallout from that blunder was immense, with bitter fans calling for his head. In the end, Joyce's personality and human side won out.
He tearfully owned up to his mistake and came out looking better for doing what we all do as human beings, make mistakes.
The more recent act is far more amazing and immensely positive.
"The woman (Jayne Powers), who has worked for the Arizona Diamondbacks since their inaugural season of 1998, had collapsed.
Joyce, on his way to the umpires' dressing room, arrived on the scene and was told by the woman's colleagues that she was having a seizure. But Joyce noticed that the woman was not breathing and began to administer CPR. A first responder arrived shortly after that with an automatic external defibrillator.
"
Doctors managed to stabilize Powers and implant a pacemaker, stating afterwards that Joyce's quick thinking very likely saved her life.
It gets better.
NESN reports Joyce kept rhythm while doing CPR by singing the tune "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees. File this under the wonderful pile of things you couldn't make up if you tried.
Joyce stated, via NESN:
"I knew something was wrong. And I knew if something wasn't done, this lady could actually die in front of me. It was more instinct than anything else. The way I look at it is, somebody needed help, and I was fortunate enough to know what to do. I just looked at helping someone who really needed it. She was in bad shape and needed help.
"
Modesty suits Joyce, a man who makes his living by staying in the shadows, calling balls and strikes with little fanfare.
We all know better, because Joyce is a certified life saver.
