Ranking the 7 Most Addable Recent Call-Ups in Fantasy Baseball

Andrew BurtonJun 4, 2018

With August baseball coming to a close, and September baseball right around the corner, fantasy baseball participants are looking for some decent additions they can make to their team.

There have been a vast number of call-ups that have shifted momentum for their team in a positive way—Bryce Harper and Mike Trout to name two—but there are still some guys that could influence their team, especially if that team is in contention for a playoff spot.

Here's a list of seven recent call-ups, complete with stats from fangraphs.com, that you should consider gambling on and picking up for your fantasy baseball team.

7. Jordan Danks, CF, Charlotte (White Sox)

1 of 7

Jordan Danks was called up today from Triple-A Charlotte to fill the void of placing outfielder Alejandro De Aza on the 15-day DL. With Dewayne Wise patrolling center field right now, expect Danks to come in and take some playing time away.

In 29 games with the White Sox, prior to his call up today, Danks is hitting .265 with one home run and three runs batted in.

Defensively, Jordan can play any outfield position, which we saw from June up until he was optioned to Triple-A last week.

Why would it benefit you to pick up Jordan Danks in your fantasy league? His playing time will increase, along with his batting average, and his solid defense will be showcased—you'll surely get some bang for your buck here.

2012 Minor League Stats: .317/.428/.514, 37 R, 8 HR, 30 RBI, 6 SB

6. Matt Carson, OF, Rochester (Twins)

2 of 7

Outfielder Matt Carson, of the Twins' Triple-A affiliate Rochester, was called up just this week; he beat out Chris Parmelee—who appeared to be the favorite to land the call to the bigs.

Five days ago, Carson's agency, Paragon Sports International, tweeted, "#Twins have called up OF Matt Carson! Congratulations Matt!"

Carson is an excellent addition to the Twins, and your fantasy baseball team. He provides Minnesota with versatility in the outfield, and a good bat on the offensive side.

Since his call-up, Matt has appeared in three games and has compiled five hits in 12 at-bats. He's batting .417 with one run batted in—not too shabby.

The outfielder will be a great addition to your team, considering he provides great defense, without sacrificing too much offense. He's got great plate discipline and never takes his eye off the ball—when up to bat or in the outfield.

Don't expect too much from Matt Carson, but he's worth the pick up.

2012 Minor League Stats: .277/.339/.447, 60 R, 14 HR, 49 RBI, 9 SB

5. Jake Elmore, 2B/SS, Reno (Diamondbacks)

3 of 7

Jake Elmore is making his presence felt in Arizona, and if someone has him on their fantasy team already, be prepared to pay a hefty price to make him yours because his stock will continue to climb.

In his six games with the D-Backs, his batting average is just above .300, but his defense is wear his value is.

In his 27 innings as a D-back shortstop, Elmore has six putouts and 11 assists, but he does have two errors—could be the jitters of being in the big leagues.

Elmore's versatility is what will allow him to become more valuable. He can play second base or shortstop on any given night, and the Diamondbacks utilize him that way.

Expect Elmore to see some quality playing time, and as a result, he'll become unavailable in your league because someone will put a claim in on him.

2012 Minor League Stats: .344/.442/.465, 95 R, 1 HR, 73 RBI, 32 SB

4. Pedro Florimon, SS, Rochester (Twins)

4 of 7

With the Minessota Twins in last place in the AL Central, they needed to do something to excite the fans—enter Pedro Florimon. The 25-year-old shortstop has surprised many in his four games with the Twins since his call-up.

As pointed out in TwinCities.com's article by Charley Waiters, in Triple-A Rochester, Florimon was a great ball player.

"

"He plays with a lot of intensity," Gene Glynn, the Triple-A Rochester manager, said Tuesday morning.

"

Why is he a valuable call-up?

Well, he's a switch-hitter and is currently batting .500 with an on-base percentage of .571 in four games with 15 plate appearances.

Need more of a reason?

With Brian Dozier batting just .234, expect Florimon to get significant playing time. Especially, with the season closing out for Minnesota and the playoffs not being in arms' reach.

His value is going to increase quickly, so if the opportunity presents itself, grab him!

2012 Minor League Stats: .251/.308/.344, 38 R, 3 HR, 27 RBI, 6 SB

3. Mike Olt, 3B/1B, Frisco (Rangers)

5 of 7

Mike Olt was called up a few weeks back, and it's safe to say he's in Texas to stay. He's spoken of highly as a defensive third baseman, but he's playing on a Rangers' team that has Adrian Beltre. However, Mike Olt will certainly see some playing time at first base.

In the nine games he's played with Texas, he's batting .222 with an OBP of .333. While he has yet to homer, Olt does have four runs batted in.

From the looks of it, Texas will again be in the postseason, and Mike Olt will definitely be a weapon available for the Rangers to make a run at another World Series appearance.

Olt is a talented young athlete—evident from the offers Texas received before the trade deadline involving swaps of Olt for Zack Greinke—so if you're in a league that allows keeper players, Mike Olt might be your best bet.

2012 Minor League Stats: .288/.398/.579, 65 R, 28 HR, 82 RBI, 4 SB

2. Moises Sierra, OF, Las Vegas (Toronto)

6 of 7

Moises Sierra was called up a little over three weeks ago, and he's been a blessing for the Blue Jays.

This guy is definitely my call-up of choice.

Sierra is batting .318 with a slugging percentage of .477. He's got two home runs and five runs batted in—all in 15 games.

Considering Jose Bautista's absence because of injury, Sierra is a dependable replacement in the meantime. Playing right field for the Blue Jays is no easy task, but Sierra has an above average arm and provides solid defense.

Overall, he's one of the more well-rounded players that will see significant playing time now and possibly next season.

If Sierra is still available in your fantasy league, pause this slideshow and go put in a claim for him—you'll thank me later.

2012 Minor League Stats: .289/.360/.472, 62 R, 17 HR, 63 RBI, 7 SB

1. Tyler Skaggs, P, Reno (Diamondbacks)

7 of 7

Tyler Skaggs was just called up yesterday, and according to reports from Jack Magrudder of Fox Sports Arizona, he'll start the second game of Wednesday's double-header (h/t Kevin Zimmerman of SBNation.com).

This is great news for those looking to get a quality left-hander that can deliver.

In his nine starts with Reno, Skaggs has a 2.91 ERA and an incredible 45 strikeouts.

Why is Skaggs a great pitcher? Well, his fastball remains constant in the low 90s, but his turn-to pitch is the curveball. Here's what Baseball America (membership required) had to say about Tyler's pitches (h/t Nick Kappel of B/R):

"

Skaggs’ money pitch is his 12-to-6 curveball with late, sharp break that’s a true swing-and-miss pitch. He sets it up by moving his lively 88-93 mph fastball around the strike zone.

"

Plain and simple, the southpaw can deal, and he'll definitely prove to be valuable and the most addable call-up to your fantasy team.

2012 Minor League Stats: 4-2, 2.91 ERA, 52.2 IP, 45 SO, 16 BB
