Melky Cabrera: Suspended MLB Star Needs to Come Clean Immediately

Adam WellsAug 20, 2012

San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera had enough problems on his hands when he was suspended for 50 games after he tested positive for testosterone, but no one was ready for the storm that was going to come just a few days later.

According to a report from the New York Daily News, Cabrera created a website that would help clear his name with Major League Baseball:

"

But instead of exonerating Cabrera of steroid use, the Internet stunt trapped him in a web of lies. Amid the information-gathering phase of his doping case last month, his cover story unraveled quickly, and what might have been a simple suspension has attracted further attention from federal investigators and MLB, the Daily News has learned.

The suspension from Major League Baseball and damage to his reputation in the eyes of the public pale in comparison to the storm that could hit him as a result of this report.

While I am sure there are a lot of things that Cabrera's lawyers are advising him not to say, he needs to say something.

Juan Nunez, who the Daily News describes as a consultant to the firm that represents Cabrera, said that he was "accepting responsibility for what everyone else already knows.”

But we don't know just how much of a role Cabrera played in this whole situation, other than the report which says he used it as "part of the presentation Cabrera and his representatives made to MLB and the players’ union before the league officially charged him with a doping violation."

Personally, the suspension for testosterone doesn't bother me at all. I know there are a lot of fans and analysts who lose their minds when the subject of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs comes up, but there has never been any conclusive evidence that proves they do anything to actually help a baseball player on the field.

However, when you look at the reported website that Cabrera created, there are a lot of legal ramifications this could have on him that will impact his ability to play baseball.

Given the year Cabrera was having as he approached free agency, he was going to get paid, either by the Giants or someone else. But now, he could be dealing with court dates and legal ramifications that rob him of playing time.

They always say the cover-up is worse than the crime. In the case of Cabrera, that could easily end up being the case.
