MLB Power Rankings: Ranking All 30 MLB Teams' MLB-Ready Prospect Pools

Mike RosenbaumJun 7, 2018

As we edge closer to September 1, when the active roster expands from 25 to 40 players, every team is busy trying to decide which prospects will improve their on-field product over the final month of the season.

For some organizations, there are numerous options at various positions. For others, it seems as though they’ll continue to rely on established major league talent.

So, after analyzing every organization’s farm system, I’ve ranked each team based upon their pool of viable September call-ups. This is not a ranking derived from the strength of each team’s respective farm system. Rather, it’s a look at which teams have the most big-league ready prospects—or close to big-league ready—whom could see time in September.

Basically, I only focused on those players at Double-A or above. Also, I took into account the state of each major league team at the moment and how that may affect their aggressiveness in promoting prospects. Therefore, for teams that are already out of contention for a playoff spot, I gave more consideration for long-shot candidates in Double-A.

30. Cleveland Indians

1 of 30

Quick Take: They don't have to worry about rushing anyone to the major leagues.

LHP Scott Barnes (Triple-A)

C Chun Chen (Double-A)

29. Washington Nationals

2 of 30

Quick Take: Expect to see both Brown and Garcia once the rosters expand. Perez is a longshot as there's but could fill in as a fourth outfielder in the event of an injury.

OF Eury Perez (Triple-A)

RHP Christian Garcia (Triple-A)

OF Corey Brown (Triple-A)

28. San Francisco Giants

3 of 30

Quick Take: Will they look to replace Melky Cabrera from within? Yes, Brett Bochy is manager Bruce Bochy's son.

OF Gary Brown (Double-A)

RHP Heath Hembree (High-A)

3B Conor Gillaspie (Triple-A)

RHP Chris Heston (Double-A)

RHP Brett Bochy (Double-A)

New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

27. Chicago White Sox

4 of 30

Quick Take: The bullpen has been a revolving door of young arms so far, and should continue to be over the remainder of the season.

RHP Jhan Marinez (Triple-A)

RHP Deunte Heath (Triple-A)

LHP Charlie Leesman (Triple-A)

C Josh Phegley (Triple-A)

OF Jared Mitchell (Triple-A)

26. Tampa Bay Rays

5 of 30

Quick Take: Here's the thing: The Rays aren't in need of another starter. Regardless, I'd expect Archer to receive one or two September starts after a nice showing in June.

RHP Chris Archer (Triple-A)

RHP Alex Colome (Triple-A)

25. Los Angeles Dodgers

6 of 30

Quick Take: It's a deep field of players, but no one capable of making an impact down the stretch.

RHP Allen Webster (Double-A)

RHP Chris Withrow (Double-A)

2B/OF Alex Castellanos (Triple-A)

C Tim Federowicz (MLB)

RHP Josh Wall (Triple-A)

1B/OF Scott Van Slyke (Triple-A)

RHP Matt Magill (Double-A)

24. Boston Red Sox

7 of 30

Quick Take: At this time next year, names like Xander Bogaerts, Matt Barnes and Jackie Bradley could be in the mix.

C Ryan Lavarnway (MLB)

OF Bryce Brentz (Double-A)

SS Jose Iglesias (Triple-A)

23. Los Angeles Angels

8 of 30

Quick Take: The Angels' bullpen is weak, so don't be surprised if they call up a starter or two from the minors to plug holes.

OF Kole Calhoun (Triple-A)

3B Luis Jimenez (Triple-A)

RHP AJ Schugel (Double-A)

1B Efren Navarro (Triple-A)

RHP Steven Geltz (MLB)

22. Minnesota Twins

9 of 30

Quick Take: They promoted a very raw Joe Benson last season, so why not believe they'll do the same this season with Hicks and/or Arcia?

OF Aaron Hicks (Double-A)

OF Oswaldo Arcia (Double-A)

21. Toronto Blue Jays

10 of 30

Quick Take: A rash of injuries has opened the door for all three prospects.

SS/3B Adeiny Hechavarria (MLB)

OF Anthony Gose (MLB)

OF Moises Sierra (MLB)

20. Miami Marlins

11 of 30

Quick Take: Does anyone else applaud the Marlins for acquiring Zack Cox for a relief pitcher? The guy was a first-round pick in 2010.

RHP Jacob Turner (Triple-A)

C Rob Brantly (MLB)

3B Zack Cox (Double-A)

19. Philadelphia Phillies

12 of 30

Quick Take: The Phillies can afford to get creative with their promotions, so it'll be interesting to see whom they choose.

RHP Tyler Cloyd (Triple-A)

RHP Ethan Martin (Double-A)

RHP Phillippe Aumont (Triple-A)

RHP Justin De Fratus (Triple-A)

RHP John Pettibone (Triple-A)

1B Darin Ruf (Double-A)

RHP Julio Rodriguez (Double-A)

18. Atlanta Braves

13 of 30

Quick Take: I think it'd be a nice vote of confidence for the Braves to offer Teheran a start or two in September. Not that's especially earned it or anything, but still.

RHP Julio Teheran (Triple-A)

SS Andrelton Simmons (MLB - DL)

LHP Sean Gilmartin (Triple-A)

17. New York Yankees

14 of 30

Quick Take: The Yankees' have two interesting bullpen options in Montgomery and Whitley, both of whom are closers at their respective level.

RHP Adam Warren (Triple-A)

OF Zoilo Almonte (Double-A)

RHP Mark Montgomery (Double-A)

RHP Brett Marshall (Double-A)

RHP Chase Whitley (Triple-A)

16. Milwaukee Brewers

15 of 30

Quick Take: Well out of the playoff race, the Brewers will likely offer both Thornburg and Peralta promotions come September, and I think that Hunter Morris is a solid longshot (but semi-realistic) candidate, as well.

SS Jean Segura (MLB)

RHP Wily Peralta (Triple-A)

RHP Tyler Thornburg (Triple-A)

2B Scooter Gennett (Double-A)

OF Khris Davis (Triple-A)

1B Hunter Morris (Double-A)

OF Caleb Gindl (Triple-A)

15. Colorado Rockies

16 of 30

Quick Take: Although Arenado's overall season at Double-A has been disappointing, there's still plenty of upside there. I think the Rockies should consider promoting for September, and if things go reasonably well, assign him to Triple-A to open the 2013 season.

3B Nolan Arenado (Double-A)

OF Tim Wheeler (Triple-A)

RHP Zach Putnam (Triple-A)

OF Charlie Blackmon (Triple-A)

SS Josh Rutledge (MLB)

LHP Edwar Cabrera (Triple-A)

14. New York Mets

17 of 30

Quick Take: If I'm the Mets, the temptation to promote Wheeler for part of September is agonizing. I'm not saying they necessarily need to give him starts; why not let him log a few innings out of the bullpen and get his feet wet?

RHP Matt Harvey (MLB)

RHP Zack Wheeler (Triple-A)

RHP Jeurys Familia (Triple-A)

OF Matt Den Dekker (Triple-A)

LHP Josh Edgin (Triple-A)

13. Chicago Cubs

18 of 30

Quick Take: While it's nice to see Jackson and Vitters finally join Rizzo in the majors, they aren't exactly the type of prospects you center a rebuild around.

OF Brett Jackson (MLB)

3B Josh Vitters (MLB)

C Steve Clevenger (MLB)

C Wellington Castillo (MLB)

12. Pittsburgh Pirates

19 of 30

Quick Take: As is the case with Dylan Bundy: utilize his power arm in September?

RHP Gerrit Cole (Double-A)

OF Starling Marte (MLB)

C Tony Sanchez (Triple-A)

LHP Justin Wilson (Triple-A)

RHP Vic Black (Double-A)

11. Oakland Athletics

20 of 30

Quick Take: WIth the ability to play basically any position on the field, Grant Green is the perfect September call-up to add to a contender's bench.

RHP Brad Peacock (Triple-A)

UTIL Grant Green (Triple-A)

C Derek Norris (MLB)

RHP Dan Straily (MLB)

RHP A.J. Griffin (MLB - disabled list)

10. Houston Astros

21 of 30

Quick Take: Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw all six players come September. The Astros are in a great position to hold auditions for 2013.

1B Jonathan Singleton (Double-A)

RHP Jarred Cosart (Triple-A)

3B Matt Dominguez (Triple-A)

LHP Rudy Owens (Triple-A)

OF Robbie Grossman (Double-A)

OF Marc Krauss (Double-A)

9. Seattle Mariners

22 of 30

Quick Take: With hard-throwing right-handers Carter Capps and Stephen Prior already in the bullpen, it's now a matter of which left-hander receives a September call-up. Both have had command issues this season, but seem ready for the exposure.

LHP Danny Hultzen (Triple-A)

SS/2B Nick Franklin (Triple-A)

LHP James Paxton (Double-A)

3B/LF Vincent Catricala (Triple-A)

RHP Stephen Pryor (MLB)

RHP Carter Capps (MLB)

8. Detroit Tigers

23 of 30

Quick Take: Rumors have died down about a Castellanos promotion. However, given GM Dave Dombrowski's history of accelerating arrivals, I wouldn't rule it out. It's not a terrible idea to employ a Castellanos/Boesch platoon in right field.

3B/RF Nick Castellanos (Double-A)

LHP Andy Oliver (Triple-A)

LHP Casey Crosby (Triple-A)

OF Avisail Garcia (Double-A)

RHP Bruce Rondon (Triple-A)

7. San Diego Padres

24 of 30

Quick Take: The Padres have a crop of prospects they could promote in September, with Gyorko being the leading candidate.

OF Rymer Liriano (Double-A)

2B Jedd Gyorko (Triple-A)

C Yasmani Grandal (MLB - DL)

RHP Brad Boxberger (MLB)

RHP Donn Roach (Double-A)

6. Cincinnati Reds

25 of 30

Quick Take: Once Hamilton shatters Vince Coleman's minor league stolen base record of 145, should the Reds utilize his speed in September? He won't play everyday and I'm not at all convinced would cut it defensively at the moment, but that type of speed will never slump.

SS Billy Hamilton (Double-A)

RHP Daniel Corcino (Double-A)

SS DiDi Gregorius (Triple-A)

1B Neftali Soto (Triple-A)

LHP Tony Cingrani (Double-A)

2B/3B Henry Rodriguez (Triple-A)

5. Kansas City Royals

26 of 30

Quick Take: Despite the cries of fans, the Royals have admirably resisted the temptation to promote both Myers and Odorizzi. Both players are key pieces of their future, and should arrive together in September.

OF Wil Myers (Triple-A)

RHP Jake Odorizzi (Triple-A)

LHP Donnie Joseph (Triple-A)

SS/2B Christian Colon (Triple-A)

4. St. Louis Cardinals

27 of 30

Quick Take: If the Cardinals believe they're in the playoff hunt, we probably won't see Miller, Taveras or Wong. But if they slide further out of contention, well, that changes everything.

RHP Shelby Miller (Triple-A)

OF Oscar Taveras (Double-A)

2B Kolten Wong (Double-A)

RHP Trevor Rosenthal (MLB)

SS/2B Ryan Jackson (MLB)

3. Baltimore Orioles

28 of 30

Quick Take: With Machado now manning third base in Baltimore, it seems that Bundy will inevitably follow in September.

SS Manny Machado (MLB)

RHP Dylan Bundy (RHP)

INF/OF L.J. Hoes (Triple-A)

2. Arizona Diamondbacks

29 of 30

Quick Take: Both Bauer and Skaggs could contribute to a D-Backs' run over the final month of the season, and are prime candidates for spots in the 2013 rotation.

RHP Trevor Bauer (Triple-A)

LHP Tyler Skaggs (Triple-A)

OF A.J. Pollock (Triple-A)

LHP Patrick Corbin (MLB)

OF Adam Eaton (Triple-A)

3B Ryan Wheeler (MLB)

1. Texas Rangers

30 of 30

Quick Take: The Rangers seem to have an option at every position, with the biggest name obviously Jurickson Profar--the No. 1 prospect in baseball. There are rumors that his promotion could come sooner rather than later, but does it make sense if he's not playing everyday?

SS Jurickson Profar (Double-A)

LHP Martin Perez (Triple-A)

3B/1B Mike Olt (MLB)

RHP Justin Grimm (Triple-A)

RHP Barrett Loux (Double-A)

OF Leonys Martin (Triple-A)

RHP Wilmer Font (Double-A)

RHP Tanner Scheppers (MLB)
