Olympic Tennis 2012: London Performance Will Put Serena Williams Back on Top

Chris StephensAug 6, 2012

In case you missed it, U.S. women's tennis player Serena Williams was simply dominant at the 2012 London Olympics, winning all 12 sets in which she played in.

After a dominant Wimbledon tournament a few weeks ago, I think it's safe to say that Williams is back on top of the women's tennis game and she's going to be there for a long time. And, I don't think anybody in the world is going to have anything to say about it.

The way she's played her game has been powerful, and the rest of the world doesn't have the ability to keep up with her.

During the Olympics, Williams dominated in every round, beating Serbia's Jelena Jankovic (No. 18 in world) 6-3, 6-1. In the second round she beat Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-2, 6-3.

In the third round, Williams overpowered Russia's Vera Zvonareva (No. 15) 6-1, 6-0, while the quarterfinals saw her show Denmark's Caroline Wozniaki (No. 8) who the boss was 6-3, 6-0.

Then, in the semifinals and finals, we saw Williams impress us the most as she defeated the No. 1 player in the world, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-1, 6-2. In the final, she was again overpowering, defeating Russia's Maria Sharapova (No. 2) 6-0, 6-1.

Williams' performance in the Olympics will widely be considered one of the most dominating of all time, and with the U.S. Open coming up soon, it's hard not to think that she is the favorite there, and the favorite to eventually take the top spot back.

She is currently on a 17-match win streak, a streak that started after her defeat in the first round of the French Open. Since then, she's been unstoppable, having only dropped three sets.

Currently, Williams sits at fourth in the WTA rankings with 8,045 points, with Azarenka ranking first with 8,820 points.

Should Williams win the U.S. Open, she can move atop the rankings again. In my opinion, I don't think it's a matter of if, I think it's a matter of when.

The way she's dominated the top players in the world lately shows that she is currently in a class of her own and it's hard for even the best players in the world to be competitive against her.

Williams is showing she is the best female player in the world and it's going to be very hard for anyone to stop her for the foreseeable future.
