Has the WWE Finally Stopped Releasing Wrestlers?

JFeb 19, 2009

It's been a little over a month since the WWE last made a cut in personnel, sacking long time employee Robert Howard aka "Hardcore Holly." Does this mean that the WWE has finally decided that they have lain off enough people to satisfy their budget cuts?

This is the longest break in cuts we have seen since Linda McMahon announced that the WWE were attempting to save 20 million dollars in operational cost.

Before this there have been similar periods of this length in time that the WWE have not fired anyone, but not since the announcements of the budget cuts. This may not be the end but it certainly shows that they are slowing down.

The WWE will not stop releasing their wrestlers, but the rate at which they have been fired recently is unprecedented. The WWE is a dynamic product, and will always have new wrestlers coming in, and subsequently there will always be some on their way out.

In my opinion the rosters are just about as small as they can’t get, and if they are cut any shorter it will start affecting the shows. At the moment they are just about managing to sustain decent rivalries, but if the draft were not so close I think we’d start seeing repeated rivalries.

WWE has always had this see-saw of quality versus profit, but I think if they take it any further the balance will be tipped too far in the favor of profit. Being financial stable is crucial to the success of the business, but the ramifications of releasing more stars will hurt them in the long run.

We as the fan will always implore this balance to lean on the side of quality, but we aren’t in charge. We do however fund them by paying for pay per view events, attending shows etc., and if they want us to carry on doing this the program has to be good.

From an ethical standpoint I can’t say that the past few months have given me any respect for the WWE, but it is a business, and the wrestlers cannot hold any grievances if they are released.

I have no resentment as to what the WWE have done recently as regards to these releases, but I think the signs that they are slowing is positive.

What do you think about the release over the past few months and the signs that they are slowing?
