Miami Heat Rumors: Defending Champions Have No Need for John Lucas III
As the Miami Heat continue their attempt to fill their roster and gear up for a run at back-to-back titles, they're bound to show interest in a few players who they have no need for.
John Lucas III is one of those players.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst originally reported that the Heat have contacted Lucas in an attempt to shore up their backcourt and ESPNChicago later continued the story by relaying a few quotes from the former Chicago Bulls guard:
""(Miami is) one of the teams that's interested in me," Lucas said on "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" on ESPN 1000. "I'm just taking time looking at everything and what's going to be the best situation for me.
"I want to go somewhere where I can contribute and go in there and just basically play and bring something to the team."
"
The problem is that Miami doesn't have any need for Lucas' contributions.
He's not going to earn much playing time at all, rending what he brings to the team almost useless. Lucas is a solid player and was incredibly efficient with the ball—although not his shot—while he was on the court last season, but he wouldn't have a role with Miami.
Mario Chalmers remains the starter and Norris Cole is entrenched in the rotation as the backup point guard.
Lucas isn't going to displace either of those incumbent point guards and his 5'11" frame prevents him from earning any run at shooting guard.
After the addition of Ray Allen, the Heat don't need much help in the backcourt anymore and should now be focusing on finding a few hidden gems, young players with high potential. They shouldn't be considering this 29-year-old, diminutive floor general with a low ceiling.
Then again, LeBron James could practice jumping over him and work to increase his already staggering vertical.
