Breaking Down New Air Jordan 6 Retro 'Olympic'

Ian HanfordJul 6, 2012

The first edition of the Air Jordan VI Retro 'Olympic' sneakers dropped in 2000 in accordance with the Sydney Summer Olympics. Now, with the London Summer Olympics right around the corner, Jordan Brand is dropping the Midnight Navy colorway on Saturday.

The originals were $120 when they initially hit stores but, because of extremely small quantities, they're very tough to find for less than $400 today.

That should give you a sign. Get to a store this weekend and scoop up a fresh pair of kicks. Do it while the retail price is still $160 because you can bet the price will skyrocket once again.

Sneaker enthusiasts live for stuff like this. Vintage shoes at half the price you'd normally pay and all because Jordan Brand recognized a demand for their "swaggin" product.

Let's take a look at how these sneakers shape up.

"WOW" Factor: 7 out of 10

This all depends on your personality. Maybe you don't want the "wow" factor. If you do, these may not be for you.

These sneaks aren't going to burn your friend's retinas with bright colors, but you are going to look fly. White sneakers are simple, but elegant, and the navy blue offsets the white overlay perfectly.

Some people want colorful sneakers with a million different things going on. Personally, I love the simple design of the Air Jordan VI Retro 'Olympic' shoes.

They don't knock your socks off with dazzling shocks of color, but their elegance comes from the sheer simplicity of their color arrangement. These are classy. I'm talking classy in the way that you won't want to wear them outside because you won't want to mess them up.

I drop the grade a bit because "wow" is normally associated with eye-popping arrangements, but don't let that deter you here.

Design: 9 out of 10

This goes back to simplicity. Just look at the color arrangement:

The navy blue is perfectly placed throughout the shoe. It isn't overwhelming, and each color is given the chance to shine through depending on where you look.

Most people don't like sneakers that are just one tone. These Jordan sneakers are sharp through the inlays, the overlays and all the way down to the outsole. The shoe's designers made a smart decision by offsetting the shoe's two main colors with varsity red on the tongue and on the Jumpman logo.

It's the perfect blend of blue and white. They could jump out at you a bit more, but this shoe's design is nearly flawless.

Overall Swag Grade: 8.5 out of 10

I've been over most of this, but let me reiterate. If you're wearing these sneakers you should be exuding quiet confidence.

These are fit for someone who doesn't need highlighter yellow and fluorescent hues of every other color to feel like they look good. These shoes make you look good because of their flawless design and precise execution of the simplest color arrangement.

If I'm looking for a new pair of shoes this weekend, this is the first place I look. The color scheme makes them versatile. They're going to match any duds you decide to throw on, and they're fit for all occasions.

Be smart. Swing by your local store and scoop up a pair of these sneakers before the price goes through the roof.
