Ranking the 5 Most Hipster Press Conference Outfits of the 2012 NBA Season
For better or for worse, hipster culture took hold of NBA press conferences in the 2012 season. Your favorite players accessorized, mesmerized and generally kept it flashy.
Some of the best outfits were homage to bygone fashion eras, whereas others were appeared to be pure invention. In either case, analysis took a back seat to costume in many a postgame interview.
With the season now in the books, here are the top five most hipster press conference outfits of 2012.
5. Kevin Durant
1 of 5Kevin Durant may have started the press conference hipster movement with his backpack and shirt-buttoned-to-the-top ensemble.
The outfit is clean and understated. It's hard to accuse him of trying too hard. And somehow, his high, narrow shoulders a long arms enhance the "Back to School Sale" look we figure he's going for.
4. Blake Griffin
2 of 5Here's what you don't know about Blake Griffin:
He's an adjunct English composition professor at Brooklyn College.
He doesn't want tenure because getting sucked into bureaucratic fray isn't what he's about —not now, with his short story collection set to drop in 2014.
And if you need to reach him on weekends, don't try his cell (doesn't carry one). Your best bet is track him down at his friend's furniture studio in the Bronx, where he crafts teak pieces while listening to Mr. Bungle (don't worry, he'll make you a tape).
3. Amar'e Stoudemire
3 of 5Here we have Amar'e sporting a black T-shirt, denim vest and a modern-day bowler hat.
The only question is, did Amar'e see Krush Groove or did Krush Groove see him?
Extra points for the sling, which is either the result of a playoff injury or an arm wave gone wrong.
2. Dwyane 'Wayne' Wade
4 of 5Dwyane Wade's become something of a villain in the 2012 season, as another B/R writer wrote a fortnight ago. We only wonder if it was necessary for him to hijack a senator's wedding when he could have told Whitley Gilbert how he felt the night before.
As seen here, a single accessory—a pair of throw-back flip glasses—can make the man, and the hipster. And we're OK with that, especially with LeBron James rocking the homage to Dwayne Wayne's best friend, Ron Johnson.
1. Russell Westbrook
5 of 5We could have easily gone with the fish hook and red glasses outfit, but this get-up deserves the nod for delivering a peerless three-hit combo: square-lens glasses, a flat-brim hat and a shirt that looks a whole lot like the bottom of an aquarium tank.
No NBA player cares more about making it look as though he doesn't care what you think about his clothes—which is what makes him the reigning granddaddy of NBA hipster couture.
