Latest Buzz from This NFL Offseason's Biggest Signings

James DudkoJun 7, 2018

Former AFC South residents Peyton Manning and Mario Williams were probably the two biggest free-agent acquisitions in this year's market. In the buildup to the new season, much of the focus will be on how both players perform coming off serious injuries.

Likewise, many will be curious to see how Vincent Jackson adapts from life away for San Diego and how Randy Moss fairs with his fourth team in two years. Here is some of the latest buzz from this offseason's biggest free-agent signings:

The Denver Broncos are taking it slow with getting Peyton Manning acclimated to a new offense and become comfortable throwing after missing the entire 2011 season. So far, it seems that Manning is ready to shake off the ill-effects of multiple neck surgeries.

On June 2, ESPN.com reported that Manning has looked good in early practices. Yet the same report also indicated the Broncos have their strength and conditioning team keeping a close eye on Manning.

The Broncos are smart to take such precautions. After such a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Manning will need time to get used to a full workload again, but the first practices are a good sign that his mechanics haven't been irreparably altered by his neck problems.

Indeed, the Denver Post has reported that the team's staff is confident about how well Manning will be able to throw this year.

New Buffalo Bills teammates impressed with first glimpse of Mario Williams

Former Houston Texans star Mario Williams has wasted no time impressing his new teammates on the Buffalo Bills. USA Today reported that Williams wowed both players and coaches with his early work at OTAs.

According to the report, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick even felt the need to liken Williams to a "Madden character." It appears that Williams is showing no signs of any lingering effects from the injury that cut his 2011 season short after only five games.

That's good news for a Bills team that will be counting on Williams to be the kind of defensive weapon opposing offenses will fear and gameplan specifically to stop.

New Buccaneer Vincent Jackson acting like a leader in Tampa Bay

It's not very often that the name "Vincent Jackson" and "leader" appear in the same sentence. However, according to ProFootballTalk.com, that's exactly what the veteran wideout has become in just a short time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After years of ugly holdouts with the San Diego Chargers, Jackson is certainly making all the right moves as he begins life in the NFC South. The Buccaneers need Jackson to be the elite target their offense has lacked for years. Being on his best behavior early is a promising start.

Randy Moss wowing the San Francisco 49ers

Randy Moss took little time making a strong impression on the San Francisco 49ers. USA Today reported that both quarterback Alex Smith and fellow wide receiver Michael Crabtree were amazed at what the 35-year-old was able to do on the field in the team's first practice.

Another one of Randy's biggest fans has been his new head coach, Jim Harbaugh. On a local sports radio show, Harbaugh said that he sees Moss as a "coach" on the field and has been dazzled by his attention to detail.

The Moss Bay Area fan club even has room for star linebacker Patrick Willis. NFL.com reported that Willis sees it as an "honor" to play alongside the "unbelievable" Moss.

It is certainly encouraging to see Moss making such a positive start to life in the NFC West. Playing for a team with genuine Super Bowl aspirations may be enough to keep him on track.

If the long-striding wide receiver has retained even a fraction of his natural downfield speed, the 49ers will again be prime contenders when the playoffs roll around.

Conclusion

It's a case of so far, so good for the four biggest free-agent signings of this offseason.

The fact that Williams and Manning are looking sharp after injury is good news for the league as well as their new teams. For Jackson and Moss, it remains to be seen how long both men will stay on their best behavior.
