French Open 2012 Results: 4 Players Who Performed the Worst Today

Chris StephensJun 7, 2018

Four days of the French Open are over, and I think it's safe to say that there are players out of the tournament who we thought would still be in.

Some of those athletes played well before bowing out of the tournament, while others were at their worst.

In today's action, there were four such matches in which players were at their worst.

Here's a look at those four players.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands

1 of 5

I praised Bethanie Mattek-Sands in an earlier article for her first-round win.

The second round, however, was a different story.

Mattek-Sands was dominated by Sloane Stephens (6-1, 6-1).

Throughout the match, Mattek-Sands looked overmatched and just couldn't get it together.

Petra Cetkovská

2 of 5

Coming in as the No. 24 seed, Petra Cetkovská should've had no problem making it to the fourth round.

Throughout the first set, Cetkovská was challenged and ended up losing 7-6.

After that, her game was gone, as she lost the second set 6-2.

Now, she'll have to go back to work to figure out what went wrong and hope she can put things back together by the time Wimbledon comes around.

Venus Williams

3 of 5

OK, so Venus Williams wasn't exactly supposed to win her second-round match with third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.

But I honestly expected more out of a seven-time major champion.

In the second round, Williams simply didn't provide that, losing 6-2, 6-3.

I can't remember the last time one of the two Williams sisters wasn't still playing in the third round of a major championship.

Marion Bartoli

4 of 5

And another seeded player falls out of the draw.

Marion Bartoli looked good in the second game against Petra Martic, winning 6-3, but that was about the only time she looked good.

Bartoli sandwiched her win in between two losses to Martic, 6-2 and 6-3.

I can understand the lapse in the first set as Bartoli was likely just getting her feet under her, but after dominating in the second set, she should've capitalized and won easily in the third.

However, it didn't happen, leaving the women's draw a little thinner.

Men's Draw Clean

5 of 5

In my opinion, the men's draw was clean on the fourth day.

The players who were supposed to win did, with those who were supposed to sweep all three sets doing so.

The best match of the day came from 11th-seeded Gilles Simon beating Brian Baker in five sets (6-4, 6-1, 6-7, 1-6, 6-0).

Simon struggled a little bit in the fourth set, but can you really blame him after a tough loss in the third set?

Other than that, everything went on like it should have.
