WWE Raw: Why John Cena Should Thank Big Show for Being a Monster Heel

Leonardo SplinterJun 7, 2018

In an article written shortly before the John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar match at Extreme Rules, Andrew Kulha wrote that Brock Lesnar returned to save John Cena, not the WWE.

Kulha explained that “the bigger the heel, the bigger the hero needed to take him out, and if Lesnar continues his rampage through the WWE universe, eventually people will be crying out for Cena.”

Kulha was correct. After the Extreme Rules PPV, it seemed that Brock Lesnar had in fact saved John Cena. How did Brock save Cena?

Like I wrote in a previous article, Lesnar saved Cena "by being monstrous enough to get the WWE universe to 'cry out' for help from Cena." While Lesnar came across as a genuine heel in the buildup and match, Cena came across as a genuine baby face.

The Chicago crowd at Extreme Rules went from chanting "Cena Sucks" to rooting for Cena. Cena even received a huge ovation after pinning Lesnar.

However, a few weeks later, the "Cena Sucks" chants returned. They were even heard during Cena's match against John Laurinaitis at Over The Limit. It was as if the fans had forgotten how Cena had rescued them from the big, bad wolf Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules.

But then, the big, bad giant Big Show cost Cena the match and saved Laurinaitis' job, and any heat from the crowd went away from Cena and straight to Big Show.

If the fans hadn't gotten back on Cena's side at Over The Limit, they were inevitably going to do so tonight, thanks to Big Show's rampage on Raw, where he viciously slammed Alex Riley's head into a wall, threatened Santino Marella, and completely demolished Brodus Clay, Kofi Kingston and R-Truth.

Big Show looked terrifying tonight and just as the fans cried out for Cena at Extreme Rules during his match with Lesnar, the fans cried out for Cena tonight—chanting "Cena! Cena! Cena!"

Tonight on Raw, Big Show claimed that he can do whatever he wants to whoever he wants and that he's a giant, not an entertainer. Does this sound familiar? It should, considering Lesnar said something similar in the buildup to his match against John Cena. More specifically, Lesnar claimed that he was an "a**-kicker," not a superstar.

Will the fans continue to cry out for Cena to save them from the big, bad monster Big Show? If Big Show continues to mercilessly demolish everything in his path, the answer to that question is "most likely." For this reason, John Cena should thank Big Show for being a monster heel.
