Atlanta Braves: Memorial Day Done Right at Turner Field

Chris StephensJun 2, 2018

The Atlanta Braves got it right on Memorial Day.

While it's true that other teams honored the 3 p.m. slot with a moment of silence, prior to that the Braves did something to honor one of America's servicemembers.

It was a moment you would expect to see on Lifetime's show "Coming Home."

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. David Sims had spent six months in Afghanistan.

After the top of the fifth, Sims' family was invited onto the field for a special video on the big screen from the husband and father, in Afghanistan, or so they thought.

At the end of the video, Sims told them to "wait a minute."

Next thing you know, Sims came from just beyond the Braves' dugout as his wife and kids sprinted towards him to embrace their hero.

As the embrace happened, just about everybody in the stands was on their feet applauding, welcoming Sims home as well.

A moment that everyone in that family will remember forever is something that the Braves understood.

In the midst of a game, everything was put aside because, after all, it's just a game. It didn't matter that the Braves were losing and on their way to an eight-game losing streak.

The Braves got it right, following multiple other professional sports teams who have helped reunite a family with their service member.

Too many times, men and women coming home from overseas come back to little fanfare, almost forgotten by many people in this country.

It's almost as if people aren't concerned, instead concerned only about themselves or complaining because their team isn't performing up to expectations.

In the end, none of it matters.

All that mattered was welcoming this airman home to his family.

Wouldn't it be nice to see more stories like this?
