French Open 2012 Scores: Most Dominating Performances from Round 1

John RozumMay 28, 2012

We expect the favorites such as Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova to dominate the beginning rounds of the 2012 French Open.

However, there are other impressive contenders that began the tournament strong this year who are worth noting. Ana Ivanovic is one player on the women's side as she lost just two games in her opening contest against Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino.

Along with that, let's see other players that destroyed the competition in Round 1.

Nicolas Devilder over Filip Krajinovic

A first-round match between unseeded foes, Nicolas Devilder of France completely obliterated Filip Krajinovic of Serbia.

Devilder won the match 3-0 and surrendered only four games to Krajinovic by advancing 6-2, 6-2, 6-0. Some areas that hurt Filip were four double faults and his inability to win after a second serve. Devilder moved well throughout and remained consistent on first and second serves.

Krajinovic also failed to win nearly as many breakpoints, which allowed Devilder to get those extra games when not serving. Had this area been more evenly keeled, we may have seen a closer contest.

Lucie Safarova over Anastasiya Yakimova

Along the same lines as Ivanovic's impressive victory of Vecino, Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova lost just two games against Belarus' Anastasyia Yakimova.

Winning the first set 6-2, Safarova performed flawlessly in the second set and won 6-0. One of the most awkward stats from this match, though, was Safarova's eight double faults to zero by Yakimova.

Clearly Safarova has to improve this area, but it also displays how well she can play defense and win volleys. Then again, Safarova scored 12 more winners and was more aggressive and successful at the net.

To that end, Safarova does need to polish her serve from those double faults, otherwise it's going to be a disappointing outing in France.

Ana Ivanovic over Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino

As expected, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia controlled the entire match in Round 1 as the No. 13 seed against Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain.

Ivanovic took the match 2-0 and won each set 6-1 by hitting winner after winner after winner. That match was rather close in unforced errors (16 for Vecino and 21 for Ivanovic), but Ivanovic also served up five aces to zero by Vecino.

Interestingly enough, Vecino did better on first serves, but failed to volley consistently and control the games when serving. Ivanovic played a complete match by winning the net and returning serves to quickly advance.
