French Open 2012: Day 1 Scores, Results and Recap

Timothy RappMay 27, 2012

The French Open is upon us, and the first day of the tournament has gone without any huge upsets, though more than a fair share of close calls.

The top-ranked players with matches on Sunday all survived, including former French Open Winners Juan Carlos Ferrero, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic.

Let's take a look at some of the most relevant results from the first day. For results from every match, be sure to check out RolandGarros.com.

Perhaps Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needs to put a bit more pressure on himself after dropping the first set in his match to Andrey Kuznetsov.

The Frenchmen already noted that he doesn't feel any French players will win the tournament, thus removing any pressure on himself during the tournament.

While it seems unlikely that anyone other than Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic will win this tournament—let's throw Roger Federer in there as well—Tsonga would certainly be on the second tier of contenders for this tournament.

Well, if he doesn't play like he did in the first set against Kuznetsov, that is.

For more on my thoughts from this match, go here.

But to paraphrase, Andy Roddick stinks on clay. Bowing out in the first round at this tournament is a major disappointment and his rough 2012 is a clear indication that Roddick's game is in the midst of a sharp decline.

Congratulations to Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, however, winning in front of his home country's fans.

Did you know that the only player not named Nadal, Djokovic or Federer to win a Grand Slam tournament since 2006 is Juan Martin Del Potro (2009 US Open)?

Crazy, right?

Del Potro won't win this tournament—his best finish at the event was the semifinals in 2009—but he did well to advance past clay-specialist Albert Montanes.

There wasn't nearly as much intrigue for the top women in early action on Sunday, as the four ladies ranked in the WTA top-20 failed to drop a set and only dropped 15 games between them.

Don't expect that to hold, however—upsets will come and intrigue will follow. But thus far, the women have been all chalk.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets pack more punch than Junior dos Santos.
