UFC 146: Cain Velasquez Should Earn Another Title Shot After Brutal Win

Patrick ClarkeMay 27, 2012

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez stole some of current titleholder Junior dos Santos' thunder Saturday night at UFC 146 with a brutal TKO win over Antonio Silva, and should be next in line to battle the Brazilian.

Although many would argue that Velasquez had his shot to dispose of Dos Santos last November when they met for the UFC heavyweight crown, Velasquez is clearly one of few heavyweights on Dos Santos' level. In addition, Velasquez was caught off guard in that fight.

Alistair Overeem and Daniel Cormier are certainly worthy opponents for the surging Dos Santos, but there is a great deal of unfinished business on the table between the current and former champions. Although there was a clear winner and no shred of controversy exists, the result left a lot to be desired from a fan's perspective.

Velasquez, who has grown accustomed to ending fights in the first round, was on the wrong end of a solid connection and had his belt won away after just 64 seconds in the cage. Not to take away from Dos Santos' victory, but the fight definitely had an element of flukiness to it.

It's no secret that Dos Santos would love to stand up and box his opponents while Velasquez would prefer to utilize his strength on the mat. Oftentimes big fights are won and lost on whoever's style wins out.

In November, Dos Santos' style won out in a big way. Maybe if the two fight again, Velasquez's style wins out.

Any way you slice it, Dos Santos and Velasquez are the two best heavyweights in the UFC right now, and prove it as champions in their prime.

Though it has yet to be announced by UFC president Dana White who Dos Santos will take on next, former champion Velasquez is the heavyweight best suited to provide fans with a superb spectacle and to perhaps avenge his dethroning last fall.
